It’s much better than the show

No really: I didn’t like the show at all. There were just a bunch of unsympathetic people doing things without explanation. The book shows what’s in the minds of those people. So I really enjoyed it.

Absolutely addictive!

It's been a while since I've listened to an audiobook instead of reading myself and I have to say I got hooked almost immediately!

PLOT / STORY TELLING:
I watched the Amazon series THE EXPANSE beforhand (which honestly is a more than decent adaptation of the rather detailed storyline!), but the actual books are so worth it! Corey manages to build a complex, yet easy-to-follow storyline and well-rounded characters using clear, concise language. Even though I already knew the plot, I was literally spellbound!
Corey's books reflect on the dark sides of humanity and international politics without appearing schoolmasterly, intertwining them with space travel and the threat of extraterrestial/alien life.

AUDIO:
Jefferson Mays captures the tension perfectly with his way of reading and brings the characters to life with subtle changes in pronunciation. His voice can easily be listened to for several hours without getting annoying (which is what usually keeps me from enjoying audiobooks) and the speed is adequate.

Definitely kept me up at night and made working whilst listening actually fun!

Very captivating

The story turns out to be a very captivating epic sci-fi adventure with lots of different well drawn scenes. Especially the characters are well elaborated. However the reader is good, but somewhat monoton. He has the ever same pronunciation pattern in every sentence. You need to get used to him, than is ok and you can concentrate on the great story.

Very good.

I came here looking for copper.. ended up finding gold. The character development is very nice and the story traps you immediately. Recommended.

Sociological punk in the solar system

Lots of classical elements mixed up with a believable universe. Characters are relatable and likeable. Laws of physics aren’t broken and there’s more a sociological focus than a science fiction focus.
Only the one main character is too stereotypical to be realistic. The other main character is a bit too classic and may seem out of place. But I really enjoyed everything that happened around them. How the other people interacted with them and how the consequences they faced with every decision didn’t get swept under the rug but actually dictated the story throughout it’s telling.
I’ll be continuing this series.

The TV Show is superior

This is just an early review. But I find it disturbing that Holden and his whole male crew are depicted as whore mongers. I don't think it suits their characters, even in a dystopian world such as the Belter world where child prostitution is common. A similar issue becomes apparent with the love arc of Holden and Naomi. There is only sexual and physical foreshadowing in Holden's narrative. Nothing underlines why Naomi is so much different to Holden compared to the whores he visited and the ca. ten sex friends he had in his five years on the Canterbury. Why is this real love? Unfortunately, love and sex in this world are thought backward. In an oversexualized universe like this, character should play a greater role for love. Decent people don't visit prostitutes, no matter how large the industry is. Just like there will always be people who don't smoke even if it's legal and cheap. Potential partners don't have to be objectified. Overall, love and sex aren't authentically translated by Corey. The TV show handles these aspects far better.
