an incredibly well written book that engages from the start to the end. a sci-fi novel that contains several different genres within itself. great narration as well.

This is a great production of a story that still feels modern and interesting. The story-structure around the protagonists is compelling and only a few of the tales show their age. Well worth listening to!

Echoing some of the other reviews here, a lot of the story and voice acting is mixed. Some great high points and some real low points as well (the soldier's tale stands out as completely uninteresting and at times baffling). But Hyperion is ultimately redeemed by a great final act that really ties its worldbuilding together and manages what many books that are superior on a moment to moment basis don't: it sticks with you. If you are in the middle of the book, wondering if its worth to go on like I was, be assured that it is.

I was put off at first by the length of the chapters, as I like to listen to audiobooks in small chunks during train rides, but once I listened to the first third of chapter 1 I was hooked.
I really enjoyed all the different stories from the main characters and was especially looking forward to the Consuls story. It was very interesting to hear how all of the characters are conected to the planet of Hyperion and how they ended up on this final pilgrimage.
Overall I really enjoyed this audiobook and I'm excited to listen to the sequel.

If you like intelligent SiFi with a big plot you will be satisfied. Not only does Dan Simmons draw a big picture of the future, he also does weave cultural and religious elements into his story. A must read for SiFi Fans. Only drawback is, that you have to read all four books ;-)

Hyperion is a tale that functions more like a collection of short stories. 7 pilgrims start towards a journey to meet a legendary creature just before an intergalactic crisis threatens to destroy the balance of humanity's sketchy empire. All the moving pieces are being referenced from the beginning of the book but they become clear very organically as one reads on. The pilgrims take turns narrating their life up to this final voyage and their reason that ties them to this almost godly being that awaits them on its Homeplanet, Hyperion. Each of their stories could be a book by its own and combine different motives, conveying vastly different feelings. The sci-fi elements are strong and interesting, seeing technology clash with politics and religion is an interesting triangle. The audiobook has also brought 7 different narrators to do the pilgrims' voices which adds a lot of character to each one of them.
Overall a stellar book with an execution that lives up to its weight.
