Nominee, Audie Awards - Audiobook of the Year, 2018

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news.

The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits.

When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved. The UN Expeditionary Force hitched a ride on Kristang ships to fight the Ruhar, wherever our new allies thought we could be useful. So, I went from fighting with the US Army in Nigeria, to fighting in space. It was lies, all of it. We shouldn't even be fighting the Ruhar, they aren't our enemy. Our allies are.

I'd better start at the beginning.

    Hooahh Science Fiction

This book was recommended to me because I listened to and loved all Bobiverse books. This really makes the point of not listening to recommendations of someone who doesn't know what good science fiction is. But let's talk about the book:
If you think that "Black Hawk Down" was a good war movie and "Battleship" good science fiction you will like this book. Its military porn, plain and simple. The author spends a really long time explaining how awesome the US army and everyone in it is and it gets tiresome fast.
The author constantly mentions how inexperienced and inept the protagonist is and then proceeds to have him achieve impossible heroic deeds - not by luck, as the author keeps assuring the reader, but by really good leadership skills and great decision making, that he shouldn't and couldn't have.
The story is full of these logic errors that really strain the suspension of disbelieve.

The only good thing about the story is Skippy, who doesn't appear until the middle of the book. which takes way too long.
The narrator is also skilled and gives life to otherwise plain and shallow characters (except Skippy).

So there is a good story hidden in here, but it is burried too deep in many errors and way too much "Hooorahh army is awesome" to make up for it.

    Sehr gut!

Ein gutes Buch mit viel Humor! Auch der Nachfolger ist gut gelungen. Vielleicht kein absolutes Meisterwerk, da etliche Wiederholungen negativ auffallen.

    God bless America!

As most of military-sf goes, this is very americany. Almost everyone else is like cargo. Lots of slang and abbreviations difficult to understand for german readers, and many anti-nazi-paroles.
But the story and the jokes are really nice, so I'll order the next one!

nice weird AI, too much army style

lot's of very funny passages, but getting a bit pathetic sometimes. guess you have to like the army stuff a lot to feel relaxed with it.
    great narrator!

    Really cool!

The first halv drags a little and I was almost getting bored with all the military jargon. But than it happened... The author takes his time to get the reader settled with the military thinking behind the fun. I liked the book and could often not stop reading. Especially the second half. The book could stand totally for itself. It could even been divided in three different storys/episodes. I am looking forward to the next one!

Funny, captivating story with weak scientific basis

If you don't put that much value on a strong scientific basis and are more interested in the "fiction" part of "science-fiction", then this book and especially series (14 books in total) is for you. Get through the first part of "We love America", then you're good. Later, the book gets REAL funny, like remarkably funny, which is why I stuck around until book 3. Personally, I probably won't go any further though.

The book is written in a military style, not a scientific. The scientific basis probably isn't even that bad compared to other books, but I may have high standards because it bothered me substantially. Some aspects are being roughly explained later in book(s), but more of the "hard" sci-fi type. Often, the author hints towards some whole new physics to solve a problem, though to his credit, it's often done in a funny way. If you're okay with that, great, the book could suit you.

For me the sci-fi was just a bit too "hard", and the humor got a bit dull by book 3 for my taste. Especially the scientific basis for the biology of the alien species seems not at all well thought-out and doesn't get talked about. Maybe it will later in the series and my criticism could thus be inadequate, I don't know.

At least the scientific inaccuracies aren't that common, i.e. the author either explains things well and respects modern science or makes up some fictional science, but at least doesn't go against modern science.

3 Stars might be a bit harsh, I'd give 3.5 if I could.

TL:DR If you don't care that much about the scientific (especially biological) part of the story, the book's for you! Super funny later on in the series!
