Nominee, 2018 Audie Awards — Audiobook of the Year

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news.

The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits.

When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved. The UN Expeditionary Force hitched a ride on Kristang ships to fight the Ruhar wherever our new allies thought we could be useful. So, I went from fighting with the US Army in Nigeria to fighting in space. It was lies, all of it. We shouldn't even be fighting the Ruhar; they aren't our enemy. Our allies are.

I'd better start at the beginning.

nice weird AI, too much army style

lot's of very funny passages, but getting a bit pathetic sometimes. guess you have to like the army stuff a lot to feel relaxed with it.
great narrator!

Sehr gut!

Ein gutes Buch mit viel Humor! Auch der Nachfolger ist gut gelungen. Vielleicht kein absolutes Meisterwerk, da etliche Wiederholungen negativ auffallen. Aber auf jeden Fall hervorragende Unterhaltung und das Guthaben alle mal wert!

Great performance, solid story, great writing.

My best audiobook so far. It isn't Assimov-like type of SF, more a popcorn-kind, but...: Performance is perfect - exactly matching the main characters. The plot is interesting, engaging and funny as hell when it can be. Couldn't stop listening!

In jedem Fall empfehlenswert!

Uninteresting and boring

Even though the reader depicts the american grunt soldier well and only lacks the ability to speak for different characters differently a bit.

The story lacks real alien aliens. The aliens pretty obviously portrait prejudices and stereotypes of WW2 participant nations. As the author repeatingly states. Very disappointing when thinking of the endless possibilities that science fiction holds for the imagination of societies.

The story also suffers by the supposedly coolness of the main character. No other character gets really fleshed out which makes them kind of irrelevant. Any action scene gets rendered boring by the characters coolness and the way he tells the story.

Americanized, primitive

Militaristic, with forced irony, to me it sounded primitive and I had to stop.
A good job from the narrator, he sounds like the story suggests, but that just made it words for me.

small science big fiction

this is basically a war story with a big stinky middle finger pointed at hard science fiction. it's fun but not very visual and no great world building or anything a sf fan would get all giddy about. lots of aliens but the author was too lazy to make them alien. they kinda just behave like humans with human mannerisms and emotions and are not at all visually fleshed out. Other planets are just like earth pretty much only smell weird or hot and that's all the description you're getting. spoiler: There is an interaction with an AI that is cringeworthy to say the least. the narration is very good. the only time a scientist is introduced into the story he is portrayed as a total douchebag. this is really baseline human being SciFi... It'siting at times but it isn't good SF

3 times the size that it should be

A shit TON of repetitive and unneeded commentary and unimportant details.

Also holy shit I am an Army veteran myself, but whoever wrote this most definitely is obsessed. Nobody even in our branch would have been this obsessed with using so many terms from the military.

Really cool!

The first halv drags a little and I was almost getting bored with all the military jargon. But than it happened... The author takes his time to get the reader settled with the military thinking behind the fun. I liked the book and could often not stop reading. Especially the second half. The book could stand totally for itself. It could even been divided in three different storys/episodes. I am looking forward to the next one!
