Peacetime can be a rough adjustment for the battle-hardened Merry Band of Pirates.

Especially when aliens don’t get the memo that the shooting is over.

    Well ...

It's a cool story. Suspense - good. Characters - mostly likeable. Story - great, if sometimes repetitive.
The Expeditionary Force books are all really great, so I hope that this assessment will be seen as a hint about something that could be changed in order to improve the series.
When listening to the conversation between e.g. Bishop and Adams or Bishop and the Bürgermeister, I wonder: Has Craig Alanson ever met people?
Nobody is this ungrateful, cynical and disbelieving. The same goes for the other pirates and representatives of the UN. Almost every major character seems to be the simulation of a human being seen from the perspective of a misanthropist. Take Margaret Adams for example, who has to mention always, to everyone and in every situation that she's a Marine and treats Bishop with a lack of care and respect that none of the people I know would ever tolerate.
Oddly enough, the characters from the Mavericks series are in contrast acting like mentally stable and fully functional human beings, except for the Ruhar and Kristang, who are acting like mentally stable and fully functional alien beings.

To summarize, the story is great and Alanson has a way of describing the world of Expeditionary Force that is really captivating. The characters though are not acting like real people, which gets increasingly annoying with every new book.

    amazing as always

the worst part of the book is that it ends, now I have to wait for the next one.
also I love the outtakes at the end.

    Can't wait for more

Brilliantly written and performed - and did I hear a reference to Skyward/Doomslug? Can't wait for the next reference in Bobbyverse either;-)

    A very well made interlude

Humanity is safe from extinction and Joe Bishop is a hero.
That's great but that's not much of a story. So Craig Alanson does the only thing that makes sense in this situation. He writes a book that tells a satisfactory ending to the sneaking-around-in-the-galaxy story, that also assigns new roles for the known characters, that introduces new villains and that kicks off a new saga. One in which humanity has a different role and new kinds of problems.
This book is very well written, the story is different but familiar and it has an unusual pacing compared to the other books in the series. The story slows down for a large part of the book. The entire middle of the book is slow but that's a good thing. It's necessary for the series and it is very satisfying.
This is one of my favorite books of the series.

Die Serie die gibt und gibt...

Wahnsinnig gut. Das Buch endet mit einem cliffhanger der die kommenden Wochen unerträglich machen wird... ich hoffe ich muss nicht so lange warten!

    Damn

The first like 2/3 are all hunky dory and then the 3/3 hits you in the face like a 3 month old Fish that was pickled in rusty nails. 15/10 would praise our lord and saviour skippy again.
