I mean I get the complaining, it is not your usual relaxing audio book. But come on!

i loved every second of it (from a hardcore fan)

Great sounds, great voice actors. Short and expensive for the length but for me the awesome quality makes me not regret a cent i spent on it.

Die Idee mit dem reichen Philantropen

Hat wahnsinnig drive, darf man nicht verpassen. Ich ärgere mich, dass mir Homefront nicht zwischen renegades und armageddon empfohlen wurde, audible halt.

Too much of everything

Great approach to the Skippyverse. It's quite alright for the first audio drama but it's a bit too much of everything. Too much music too loud, too much audio effects. The story is comparably lame in the light of earlier Expeditionary force books. Listening to the ground crew training in their mech suits isn't all that interesting. But I love every character and listening to Skippy and Joe talking.
I'd love to hear a deeper story, less minor sidestories and less noise. This review is meant as an encouragement, not harsh critic ;)

I did not like it

Before going to the criticism, let me talk about the good things:
1. Casting Kate Mulgrew as Nagatha is actually very fitting and hearing Janeway curse is kinda funny.
2. R.C.Bray is doing a fantastic job as Skippy and Bishop as he always does.
3. Fortunately it's not to long

Now the negatives:
1. The background noises are over the top and distracting. Less is sometimes more. If you listen to it using headphones you should be fine but through normal speakers there can be things that will be hard to understand.
2. Brock Steel - I didn't like his character one bit and that goes especially for that annoying finger snapping.
3. Some of the interactions between Skippy, Steel and Bishop were just outright mean spirited. The character of Bishop was so heavily attacked for no reason that it made me want to just stop. I know that Skippy is an a-hole but some of things he said were outright vile.
4. The general writing in this one feels like there was heavy influence from "Hollywood" and I don't like it. I like the expeditionary forces series because it tells entertaining science fiction stories while staying away from current politics. In this one politics were creeping into it.
5. Hearing a constipated stuttering AI for several minutes at a time is seriously annoying. Combining this in the later parts of the story with a slow talking AI that for obvious reasons sounds like a person with speech impediment makes it even worse.

This is the kind of story that seriously pushes me to the edge of dropping the series altogether and I hope the next one will be better. In enjoyed the books 1-7 very much (including 3.5) and I want to keep listening to it and even hope that at some point they might be able to turn it into a TV show. Still this one was pretty bad and I struggled with myself not giving it a worse rating...

Why does everyone hate this, this is MAGNIFICENT!

First of all, the plot is pretty standard for Exfor.

The makeup of this episode, however, is something different. I absolutely ADORE how R.C. Bray reads the "normal" novels, but having a full cast just adds more color to the characters.

I really like how they did Smythe, even though he kind of sounds like an NPC from a cheap shooter game's intro sequence. Kate Mulgrew wasthe wrong choice for Nagatha, though. She's just way too Janeway and not enough "creepy aunt".

Overall, I absolutely adore this. Will I be happy to get back to R.C. Bray's solo readings? Hell yes, they are just way more relaxing. Will I listen to this special episode again? HELL F***ING YES!

Satisfied

Too be honest, I really had fun with this. It's different from the usual stories, more actionladen. More like a hollywood movie.
The voicecast ist good to solid and the effects and music are fun. The bestial voices of the kristang fit.
The different voices lend the story an additional layer as now you can have a much clearer picture of characters now.
I do not concur with my fellow critics. I liked this.
If you are into audioplays this is definitly one of the
better ones.

Revised Version. Much Better Now

The audio balance issues mentioned by others have been heard by the creators and addressed with a revison.

If you were on the fence about skipping this one because of the older reviews, consider listening to it. The story is worth the 5 hours and it's much better now.
