    Inhaltsangabe

The eighth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series.

Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper.

In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father, the emperor, doesn't guess.

And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime.

Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule - and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough....

    okay let's poke the bear

The empire decided to annoy the old ones that killed the Creator's of the proto molecule. After that the fecal matter hits the ventilation system. Also "that is not dead which can eternal lie..."

Very good part of the story.

    Wie immer genial!

Wie in den anderen Büchern davor hat sich zum Ende wieder einmal alles verändert.
Mit dem ersten Satz ist man direkt in der Story und will nicht mehr aufhören.

Good story but for me it was partly too streched.

I was tempted to skip over some parts, that were too much "philosophical" and did not really enrich the story. On the other hand some parts and charactets are streched thin, like Amos or EMC people.

Excellent story and lecturer, worse adio quality

Story and voice actor are excellent like for the 7 previous books. However, the adio quality is worse than with the previous ones. Most of the time everything is normal and in the usual good quality. Yet sometimes all of a sudden it sounds like they recorded with a bad microphone. There are insidances like this throughout the whole book. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the program (but I know from the other adio books of the series that better is possible, so 3 stars for this one).

    Good story, terrible recording

This is probably the worst recording quality out of all 8 book available now... Shame.

    Lazy writing

As a great fan of the excellent GoT novels of Martin i followed his recommendation for "The Expanse". I really enjoyed the first few books, and still love the general idea and universe. But more and more the behavior of the characters and the events happening seems very constructed and lacks depth and "realistic" events. E. G. after years in charge of a whole galaxy the laconian empire lacks any kind of structure, not even an admiralty and their military conduct seems totally unprofessional. It seems that the author is missing a deeper understanding of psychology and also organizational structures.
Thats a pity as the overall story arch and the question who the big enemy is, is still very engaging.

A little too much j.r.r. martin

this is an excellent book but one can feel martens influence. he is just that bit too trigger happy. it may be all the rage to kill off everyone and their dog but it does not necessarily make the best plot decision.

My personal favorite of the series

Struggled with the previous narrative, starting with the Free Navi, the whole Marco storyline felt half-baked and also the 7th book was not entirely to my taste. But this one made it all worth going through.
I love the writing style of the authors so much. The way of describing how after some 20 or 30 years Naomi and Alex ascend back into space with the good old Rocinante is just beautiful.

    Bad audio quality, great book.

Audio quality was way worse than previous book, it almost physically hurt my ears at times to listen to this. Be sure to download the higher quality version, as the default quality one is near impossible to actually listen to. Despite that, the book itself was great, as was the narration.
