    Inhaltsangabe

The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work by the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for HBO's Game of Thrones.

With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally best-selling author George R. R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than 80 all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Listeners have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving listeners a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

    Kritikerstimmen

“A masterpiece of popular historical fiction.” (The Sunday Times)

“[Fire & Blood] explores the dragon-fueled secrets upon which the current saga is built." (Hollywood Reporter)

“[There are] treasures hidden in this new Targaryen history.” (Vanity Fair)

"Martin has done it again.... [Fire & Blood is] a beautiful weaving of the wars, marriages, deaths, dragons, and politics that shape the world Martin has created, leaving the reader feeling like this is a true history rather than a piece of fantasy. This is a masterpiece of world-building.... Beyond Martin’s legions of fans, anyone with a taste for richly, even obsessively detailed historical fiction or fantasy about royalty will enjoy this extraordinary work.” (Booklist, starred review)

    Only for hardcore fans!

However much I like the story of game of thrones, it is not very entertaining to listen to a storyline with no actual character interaction. Of course I would like to know how Egon the concerer came to rule over the seven kingdoms, but not by reading it like a history book in school!
I guess only hardcore fans would be interested in this history lesson.

Not what you expect in a G.R.R. Martin Novel

Obviously everyone is waiting for the Winds of Winter and the question is, why would the author waste his time and focus on this pointless drivel. It doesn’t tie anything together and even stops short of the only character I hoped to hear a bit more about (“Egg”)
It creates a background which no one asked for with characters of zero relevance to the ones from Ice and Fire!
This is just a big waste of time, one is better off reading/listening to a real history book. I recommend instead “The Romanovs, 1613-1918”, actually extremely similar, about the rise and fall of a ruling house over 10 generations, with lots of details on interpersonal relationships, politics and wars. Thinking about it, it might have inspired this book, only the it ACTUALLY HAPPENED!

I hope I’ll live to read the Winds of Winter, but since GoT has already overtaken it and the main story line is out, it might make G.R.R. Martin even less likely to finish it.

Martin had fun, I did not

as a kid I drew many maps with castles. I do not think that anyone else would be happy to see these maps, but I had a lot of fun.

    Boring nonsense

This is utter gibberish. George R.R. Martin is miles, if not to say leaps away from his A Song of Fire and Ice. This is primary school English, enriched with stringent, purely chronological empty waffle. It is superfluous, shallow, devoid of any dialogue, plot, scheme, development, character, personality... the list of what is missing could continue forever.
I admire Simon Vance for his stamina to read through this. His performance is as great as it could be, but his voice and his fabulous, unsurpassed skill to give life to characters is completely wasted on this pile of trash. If it were a book, I'd use it to kick of a fire in a winter. Ridiculous to put that on the market. Without Martin's fame, this would be nowhere and Martin would be nowhere, if he dared to write his novels like that. What a disappointment!

    Vorgeschichte zu Game of Thrones
