Incredibly fascinating, which is not easy to do for a fictional history book. Enjoyed this part a lot and will definitely get the second part.

I like the story of game of thrones and am also curious about all the stories and tales of the earlier days in the realm with the Targaryens. this book presents exactly such stories and a lot of them. However, it's not very entertaining to listen to a storyline with no actual character interaction. This audiobook is more like a history book from school.
I guess only hardcore fans would be interested in this history lesson.

Yes, this book (and all other 'Westerosi History' books by GRRM) is a fake non-fiction book. That means you will not get a lot of characters' pov or dialog, like you do in the Song of Ice and Fire main books. This is an overview of Targaryen history starting with The Conquest and ending about half way through the Targaryen reign, a few years after the end of the civil war known as The Dance of the Dragons.
And, yes, this is basically a heavily abridged version of 'Fire and Blood', which runs 27 hours and 15 minutes, compared to this book's 8 hours and 10 minutes.
So, in a way this might be seen as a rip-off... but it has one strength: Harry Lloyd (known as Viserys Targaryen in the show Game of Thrones and the audio book 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'). Now, I'm not saying Simon Vance did a bad job with Fire and Blood. He sounds like an elderly Maester giving you a history lesson by the fire. But Lloyd does such a great job and has such a pleasant voice that I greatly enjoyed revisiting this version, even if it is stiffly abridged compared to the original.
