The forerunner to The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion tells the earlier history of Middle-earth, recounting the events of the First and Second Ages, and introducing some of the key characters, such as Galadriel, Elrond, Elendil and the Dark Lord, Sauron.

The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.

Included in the book are several shorter works. The Ainulindale is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabeth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.

story can be a bit hard to follow with all the names of people and places but otherwise quite enjoyable. I really like the voice of this audiobook but the overlaid music at the end of some chapters is extremely distracting to me.

An amazing and rich journey through an epic fantasy adventure. For the newcomer a lot to take in, but well worth the effort if taken in bite sized chunks. A must if you really want to understand Tolkien's world, although several readings/listenings are required.

Was soll man sagen, es ist eben das Silmarillion. Wer tiefer in das Universum Tolkiens eintauchen möchte kommt hieran nicht vorbei. Es handelt sich hierbei um die englische Originalfassung. Der Text wird Qualität sehr gut gelesen und auch die Tonqualität kann überzeugen.

It is quite complex to follow without being able to go back a couple of pages every time some name is used.

Nonetheless, a well narrated and interesting story for Tolkien fans. I would not recommend it for casual listeners.
