Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

Real fun

It's Ciaphas Cain, you get what you expect and will enjoy it.
Acting and story wise at least...

Sadly this audio-version has some issues. The retakes are very obvious and disruptive (different tone, cadence and presumably different equipment). At least two mayor slips of the tongue also slipped past the quality contol.
I expected more diligence from the editor, shame.

Great voice-acting with some edit issues.

I really enjoyed this book, so far the whole first 3 books have been superb. Recommended

Really entertaining story

Story and performance wise this is as good as the first two stories, but there is the issue that the chapters for audible do not match up with the chapters of the story. For whatever reason both get out of sync about 1/3 into the story, so that a story chapter starts/ends in the middle of an audible chapter. You can of course still pause manually after a story chapter, but it makes it difficult to judge if you can squeeze in another chapter during your cummute.

as good as the previous two stories, but
