And at the forefront of that crusade are Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only - better known as Gaunt’s Ghosts. Trapped in the grinding trench warfare of Fortis Binary, the Ghosts find themselves drawn into a conspiracy to assassinate the crusade’s leader, Warmaster Macaroth.

With enemies all around them and no one to trust, Gaunt and his men must find a way to save the warmaster and prevent the Sabbat Worlds Crusade from falling into anarchy - even if it means waging war on their supposed allies.

Da die Gaunt's Ghost Reihe zuerst das 13. Buch Salvation's Reach in Audioform veröffentlicht hat war ich erst komplett verwirrt. Jetzt mit dem Ersten Buch der Reihe wo Gaunt noch sehr jung ist wird so einiges klarer es ist genau wie man sich das für das erste auftreten einer Figur einer langlaufenden Serie hoffen kann mit genauen Erklärungen der Motive und Persönlichkeit der Hauptfigur. Der Sprecher hat einen ausgezeichneten Job hingelegt. Kann es gar nicht erwarten bis die Reihen die Lüke zwischen dem 5. und 13. buch schließt dann werde ich garantiert die ganze Serie kaufen.

No complaints at all. In hindsight you see differences to the later books, but the author addressed the issue in a later installment, so all good..

The history is rich and keeps you hooked, the feeling of fatality is in each corner. The performance is awesome, but sometimes is hard for me as a non native English speaker to follow up. Recommend.

Großartiger Sprecher, und tolle, packende Geschichte die einen fesselt und in ihren Bann zieht. Das düstere Setting und die vielfältigen Kulminationspunkte tragen zu dieser großartigen Erzählung zusätzlich bei.

It's the first book of Abnett's famous series about kommisar Gaunt and his regiment of imperial infantry, the Ghosts.
I've already read the book twice, so none of the twists and revelations were really new to me but it was great fun anyhow.

What I like most about the story and Abnett's style in generell is how the story happens aside from longsome battles and boring stories of slaughter towards the real paramount.
Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of bloodshed and many characters you just started to know and like will die since it is war. But still those deaths serve a purpose in telling the story. And the story is worth it.

Unglaublich spannende Geschichte die aus Zeitmangel nicht vor dem Einschlafen gelesen werden sollte da das Buch viel zu fesselnd ist.
