Footnotes are a series staple - but in this one they are massively overdone. In the first few chapters, there are so many footnotes per sentence that it becomes difficult to follow what's going on. And the footnotes aren't always amusing or interesting, some just feel disruptive and unnecessary. The frequency of the footnotes becomes tolerable at around the halfway point, but it's still enough to disrupt the flow of the narration a great deal.
A key character in this book is voiced with an unpleasant, annoying, high-pitched voice... which is accurate to the text, as he's indeed supposed to have an unpleasant voice, but unfortunately that doesn't make the listening experience any better. I constantly have to fight the urge to skip over dialogue featuring this character, which is a shame.
The final nail in the coffin for me is that for a certain character, present-day neo-grammar is used. This completely breaks the immersion for me, becomes confusing as it's sometimes unclear who or what is being referred to, and is in my opinion massively stylistically unfitting for a 40K story, to the point of absurdity.
For me, these issues add up to the point where I can't really get invested in the story. Which is a shame, because I was really looking forward to another Necron/Mechanicus book. I'll still finish it - it is a Cain book, after all - but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not a die-hard fan of the series, and I won't listen to it a second time.
