When Commissar Ciaphas Cain and his regiment of Valhallan Guardsmen are deployed to the ice world of Simia Orichalcae, his expectation of an uneventful tour of duty is suddenly interrupted.

While his Valhallan regiment are happy on an ice world, Cain's biggest concern is freezing to death...until orks start attacking, and then an ancient threat emerges from the depths. Stuck between two enemies, Cain needs to stop playing the hero and actually be one.

The story:

On the ice world of Simia Orichalcae a spate of mysterious disappearances is causing unrest amongst the mine workers, and, as senior officer of the Astra Militarum, Commissar Ciaphas Cain is nominated to investigate. Unbeknownst to him, the planet is right in the path of a major ork incursion, and, as the savage greenskins attack, a malevolent evil begins to stir deep in the ice caves.

Cool history to all Warhammer's lore fans

It's Cain doing what he is best in, avoiding dangers and hazards, while saving the day.
What starts as a rather boring defense tasks quickly escalates in a deep dive, down in the bellows of the planet.
It's fun, Cain is as cynical as ever, and Jürgen, well he's still Jürgen.
A fun audio book for everyone who knows Cain and this style of stories, but I also highly recommend it to those, who don't know about Cain. It's a refreshing take on the grim dark future.

A very amusing audio book of the emperor's braves servant

… und kurzweiliges Buch. Schöner zweiter Titel und Fortsetzung zum ersten Roman. Die Stimmung von WH 40k aus Sicht eines imperialen Regiments wird sehr schön eingefangen. Der Platz ist vorhersehbar, aber bietet an der ein oder anderen Stelle eine kleine Wendung oder zumindest einen guten Spruch der Charaktere, so dass es nicht sonderlich weh tut oder auffällt. Gut für zwischendurch. Weiter zu empfehlen.

I really like the Caiphus books because the narrators are really good especially Stephen Perring.

The excellent style of the books loses nothing in the audio adaptation. The footnotes are very well integrated, and the various voices work perfectly for their characters.

liked the character works, the dynamic between the commisar, AdMech, Guardsmen and other characters. Jürgen is always apreciated.

Cain is a great character, and bringing some humor into the Warhammer 40K is always a welcoming addition. The story is in my opinion better than the one in the first book, but some light repeating elements from the first book are noticeable, which is why both books felt oddly similar. Repeating elements aren't an unheard or even bad thing in a series of books, especially in comedy, but I hope that the author won't overdo it in later installments.

The narrators are doing a great job. I can only recommend this audiobook.
