Über diesen Titel

Book one in the Bequin series.

Listen to it because:

It's an intriguing and evocative story that shows characters you know and love through new (yet strangely familiar) eyes, forging a stunning mystery that will leave you astonished.

The story:

In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose. Helped by a disparate group of allies, she must unravel the secrets of her life and past if she is to survive a coming battle in which the line between friends and foes is fatally blurred.

Marvelous masterful story with a wonderful reader. Absolutly awesome, can't recommend enough! Really enjoyed it greatly!

Amazing!

Dan Abnett is a master of cinematic storytelling of fighting scene, and the sheer number and scope is just amazing. And here is the "but", but––and I don't want to spoil to much––they better fit in the Horus Heresy books or the other military adventures in the Warhammer 40.000 universe. This are the Inquisition stories, with maybe a Space Marine, Xenos or––and Dan Abinett admitted it himself––hard to believe maximum Titan as "end-boss", not more.

The potential and training of Bequin, which is built at the beginning, is only used sometimes in the book. Everything just happens to the main character. She stumbles through the book––maybe like Rey in the new Star Wars Sequels. She has at least the proper preparation and training, and since we, as reader, know something, she gets very wrong, you may enjoy the voyeurism of the situation.

But every time she is nearly killed or the story needs a twist, here comes the ex-machina. It's believable once, maybe twice, but more than three times?

And the story with Eisenhorn vs. Ravenor is hardly touched, just a bit of background story at the end, which could also be happened without the main character. The artistic trick of the author, that she––maybe in the next book––has to make a morale or personal decision is shallow. And spoiler! It ends on a huge cliffhanger, it's the first book in the new series. And this is the prelude. Sure it will be epic at the end, maybe?!

But––again––it's still very well written, cinematic and vividly like a true Dan Abnett. And doesn't has the lengths of the ravenor books, which quite escalating with it's vividly style, and interrupts the pace. This is not a Philippica, you get, what you want. The first part of a Abnett story with quite some epic fights. I just hoped for more inquisitorial epicness. Even as prelude, like the rise of an archenemy like M. or a demon, which is up to destroy the hole materium, and no one believes Bequin (sounds familiar, doesn't it?). Leave the Space Marines, the bolters and epic weapons with the military side. That's why we have Bequin, she is not as overpowered yet as Eisenhorn or even Ravenor, that's why the story evolves around her, since it's to epic!

One ex-machina to much!

A very fast paced novel, beautifully read and produced. Am absolute nailbiter from start to finish.

Nailbiter!

The story keeps getting better connecting to other previous characters including and especially Eisenhorn and his demon friend!
