The Night Lords - traitors and killers who use fear as a weapon - face threats from within and without as they struggle to rebuild their Legion and continue to fight the Long War.

Listen to it because:

It's an assured and confident second novel from Aaron Dembski-Bowden that kicks off one of the most acclaimed and beloved series in Black Library history - and it's a chance to see the Long War from the Night Lords' perspective!

The story:

The Night Lords were once among the most potent forces of the Imperium, Space Marines who used fear itself as their weapon. Now, cast adrift from the Emperor's light and hunted as heretics after their monstrous betrayal, the Night Lords clad themselves in symbols of death and fight the Long War, bringing pain and terror to all who worship the corpse-god of Terra.

A summons from Warmaster Abaddon sends these rebels on a dangerous journey that leads inexorably to a conflict with the Emperor's chosen warriors, the Blood Angels.

Written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Running time 13 hours and 5 minutes. Narrated by Andrew Wincott.

Incredible Story, very good voice acting. I loved the three books so much, I've read them twice already and plan to reread them sometime.

Best trilogie I've ever read.

Good story, superb voice acting, good introduction to the Night Lords as such. Also accessible to 40k laymen

Voice acting that rivals an audio drama

This is the first of 3 books alltogether known as the Nightlord-Omnibus.
Soul Hunter features the introduction to the mostly ignored Night Lords or what is left from them. As the reader you are sucked into the story right from the dark beginn... taken hostage by Talos and his Brothers. Taken to a sinister 30k battleship and to a warp-beast in command.

The story itself make this audiobook a great thing, the reader does a good job... yet I dont understand why a russian accent is used for some characters from Nostromo.

A long dark wait has finally ended.

Audible tragically has some fatal design flaws, which is why it.. deleted my first review. upon doing something as drastic as changing the tab on my phone for 2 seconds. I must commend the well paid IT-department profoundly for their boundless competence.
That is the reason I will keep it short and sweet, as I am too frustrated to repeat writing my very expansive previous review.

in short: I think this audiobook is great. 10/10.
Id say youll have to be vaguely familiar with Warhammer 40K lore, the world this book takes place in, but if you're not, I'd argue it's worth familiarizing yourself with the lore of 40K for this book ALONE!

The story is fast paced, and has a harsh entertaining build-up with a final, but very gratifying reward, making you cheer with some of the worst people written in fiction.

The world is very rich, immersive, surreal and morbid, the narrative explores a lot of the internal politics inside of the Nightlords-Legion, and the remnants of their nostraman culture, leftovers from Nostramus, birthplace and home-planet of their Gene-Sire, Primarch Kunrad Curze, the Night haunter. It also explores "Chaos United" and what happens when the first half of that term is more closely abided by than the second.
I personally really liked the characterisations of the different Nightlords next to our 2 protagonists, deeply heretical, but still holding on to archaic memories of order, brotherhood and moral architecture, albeit a lot of it in ruin.

I myself find myself rarely enjoying writing of any kind, as I often can't suspend by disbelief past repetitive, childish tropes, not so subtle self-inserts by the author, initiated sub-plots that never go anywhere, or excessive exposition with no plot at all. You will find none of this, in this Book. the Narrative is very coherent, and comes full circle in a satisfying manner. Now I am aware that Space-Marine-Themed writing *can* be a bit polarising, but let me say this: This book comes with all of the cool-factor Spacemarines come with, with none of the childish "I beat everyone and win everytime"-cliché.

Now to the more underrated aspect that really surprised me:

the narration. it is RESPLENDENT. I don't think it could've been done any better. The narrator/reader definitely thought about the xharacter's beforehand, and chose which voices to gift them with, with great care and consideration. At the start I didn't quite get it, where the narrator was going with these unorthodox intonations and accentuations. But at the end, I just thought to myself "I GET IT. They absolutely sound this way. I know these characters personally". And these are not very generic characters. They are traitor-space-marines, some of which corrupted, some of which psychically cursed, and some of which having a more close relationship with the the Omnissiah. But there's also regular humans. Even women (!?!) (I'm joking.. at least by a good 21%).
I also think the narrator has the perfect voice for the theme of this book. It's deep, umbral and smooth as a lake of ichor. It reminds me of Wes Johnson's voice for the character Lucien Lachance. If you played TES4 Oblivion, you'll know what I'm talking about.

All of this is of course highly subjective, written ramblings by someone who was just moments ago too frustrated to write even a single word after their favourite app chose to Exterminatus their first review for Heresy. I hope I was able to help you. And my gratitude to the author and narrator, for the past 13 Hours, that you made my life a bit less mundane.

10/10. If you love Warhammer 40K, you'll love this. Also surprisingly great Narration.
