It just loses any believeability
This series has a very big problem with believeability. In every story the "good side" lacks information and manpower and they seem to always be one step behind just to overcome the odds at the end, compared to their enemies who seem nearly omniscient and have endless ppl willing to die for them and think 2 steps ahead until they're finally beaten at the end.
Such situations would be somewhat believeable if the enemy in these scenarios was the big bad Mars government that controls several systems and has this massive strong fleet not some traitors and seditionists that have to work in secret.

A step down from the previous books
The book is more like Starship's Mage 2 than the better Starship's Mage 1 and overall a decent read. Sadly the story was "forced" forward by implausible character decisions which left a sour taste after finishing the book.
