Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters.
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil.
He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.
After cementing itself as one of the best-rated serial novels on Royal Road with an astonishing 13 million views, He Who Fights with Monsters is now brought to you in professionally formatted audio.
©2021 Shirtaloon (P)2021 Podium AudioI was recommended this book and went in without any prior knowledge of this series and I instantly consumed the whole book as I was intrigued about how it would go on at every point. I was looking the book up online and found many negative reviews complaining about Jason being to "loud mouthed" and also his atheism and what not. I can definitely not share this Attitude. While he definitely comes across some what op in his social awereness , he is very consistent in his behavior and also explains his reasoning behind it. I found his overconfident way believable with the explanation of "it's another world, were else should you start if you want to change something". I also quite like that he has some struggles in accepting the religion of the new world and overall seems to show some development.
The story is, especially for litRPG, is quite fresh and avoids some other tropes. It is very engaging and has the promise for many more adventures. The magic system and the world backstory seem very interesting although the essence stuff was quite confusing at first.
Things I disliked: The narrator is quite monotone, especially when reading character sheets. Additionally, the constant "...Jason said....Rufus said..." is somewhat annoying (but you get used to it). And I read somewhere that the dialog seldomly contains any real discussion apart from the main story or bantering without consequences. I would agree to this assessment. There is room for improvement here.
overall: very enjoyable litRPG story with fresh ideas, interesting system and engaging story which I hope will only get better in the next parts.
Definitely worth listening to.
Suspenseful litRPG that hooks you in
