Während sich die Fantasy-Romane um Eragon ja vor allem an ein jugendliches Publikum richten, ist dies Christopher Paolinis nicht nur erster Science-Fiction-Roman sondern auch sein erstes Werk für Erwachsene. Nun, auch seine Fans sind schließlich älter geworden.
Eine junge Xenobiologin findet auf dem Mond eines fremden Gasplaneten einen nanotechnologischen Bioraumanzug, der sich untrennbar mit ihrem Körper verbindet, und löst dadurch einen galaktischen Krieg aus. Der Anzug verleiht ihr ungeahnte Fähigkeiten, die sie erst einmal zu kontrollieren lernen muss. Gleichzeitig findet sie sich zwischen den Fronten der tödlichen Auseinandersetzung wieder, die nur sie stoppen kann.
Christopher Paolini hat eine epische, temporeiche Space Opera geschaffen, die einen rasch in ihren Bann zieht. Sein Worldbuilding ist detailliert und schlüssig und bietet dabei jede Menge Sense of Wonder. Seine Figuren, insbesondere die Crew der Walfish sind liebenswert skurril. Die Handlung biete jede Menge Überraschungen.
Jennifer Hale liest den Roman großartig. Jeder Protagonist hat seine individuelle Stimme. Schön ist auch, dass das Nachwort vom Autor selbst gesprochen wurde.

I still felt like giving "To sleep" a shot. To make it short: I bow before you, oh great and mighty Paolini! What a great, intense story! I love the characters, the science, the plot, the tempo, the pictures you form in my head. Thank you for a good 32 hours of that amazing dive into a sea of stars!
Now I gonna double my investment of time;)

I don’t want to spoil anything or hype it up too much. I got into it basically blindfolded and I liked it. Of cause it has some flaws that may annoy a few people. But basically if you liked Eragon, I think this new book is better. It kinda reminded me of Red Rising, but more spiritual and questioning. Not as much war and the whole concept of different classes.

It is very touching, has great characters, and is something new entirely.
It starts kind of slow, but don't let that throw you off.
I also really like that the tech is based on actual theories and biochemistry parts make sense.

It wasn’t mind-blowing, but it was definitely engaging and well-written. I liked the ideas, the world, and the characters—and the title? Absolutely beautiful. It fits the story’s tone so perfectly.
