Inhaltsangabe

"Narrator Jennifer Hale's outstanding performance brings this story of alien invasion to life.... Hale's range of differentiation is masterly as she animates all the quirky characters Kira meets. From the rough, snarky slang of ex-military woman to the half-mad musings of a human 'ship mind,' every unique voice enhances the listening experience." (AudioFile magazine, Earphones Award winner)

This program includes an afterword read by Christopher Paolini, as well as a bonus conversation between Christopher Paolini and Jennifer Hale.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is a brand new epic novel from New York Times best-selling author Christopher Paolini.

This program is read by Jennifer Hale, a Canadian American actress and singer who has appeared in hundreds of cartoon episodes and taken on roles in well over 185 video games, winning multiple awards. Her varied roles include Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, Rosalind Lutece in BioShock Infinite, Cinderella in both games and animation, Kronika in MK11, Naomi Hunter in the Metal Gear series, several roles in The Powerpuff Girls, Justice League, Avengers Assemble, the Emmy Award-winning Lost in Oz, Jean Grey/Phoenix in both games and animated series, and dozens more. This is her first audiobook.

Kira Navárez dreamed of life on new worlds.

Now she's awakened a nightmare.

During a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet, Kira finds an alien relic. At first she's delighted, but elation turns to terror when the ancient dust around her begins to move.

As war erupts among the stars, Kira is launched into a galaxy-spanning odyssey of discovery and transformation. First contact isn't at all what she imagined, and events push her to the very limits of what it means to be human.

While Kira faces her own horrors, Earth and its colonies stand upon the brink of annihilation. Now, Kira might be humanity's greatest and final hope....

A great Sci-fi listen

This book scratches that hard(ish)-sci-fi itch I've been missing now that The Expanse has come to an end. The story is solid with an interesting premise and great characters. Though it is a bit long winded (I didn't have any issues with this, but some people might be put off by this). Jennifer Hale's performance in voicing this book is, as expected from her, absolutely stellar (FYI: One of her most known performances is as Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy). She really brought the Characters to life, from the borderline crazy Gregorovich to the snarky Sparrow.
All in all, this book is definitely worth a listen!

Weird pacing and some character problems

I have seldomly felt that a book is too long, but this one definitely is. Although the beginning and ending are good, pace-wise, the middle grinds to a complete stop. Who knew that one could be bored by cool aliens?
Another, maybe bigger problem for me lies with the main character. [Mild SPOILERS following]
She gets over mental trauma in record time and without any lasting issues. Although what she goes through is something that no one would get over that quickly (if at all).
Also, her continuous blind trust in the government makes no sense with her background and life experiences. It often pulled me out of the narrative, because it was so unbelievable. [Mild SPOILERS over]

The saving grace is the portrayal of pets and animals in general, as well as several humanising interpersonal moments. Paolini is great at showing such small, human, relatable moments.
Also, Jennifer Hale is a brilliant narrator and does a wonderful job giving each person a distinct voice.

Well written but boring story

The world building and since fiction is good and convincing. The characters are well written though the development seems a bit rushed and at least to me the guilt tripping seems unwarranted and therefore kind of annoying. But the biggest issue is that the plot(s) just isn't interesting or at least it didn't get me to care. So overall it is fairly entertaining especially at the beginning but I honestly didn't care for the middle and later parts to the degree that I almost didn't finish.

Long and wondrous

What a ride. The book starts with a very innovative outset and bored me a little in the middle part with too much running and shouting and Now We Learn All The Characters Back Stories At Once and Oh, Now The Whole World Is At Stakes sci-fi tropes. Still I had so much fun. The characters are interesting and relatable, the physics seems coherent and the story touches a lot of important topics. I liked a lot that the cast has interesting and layered women AND men. Jennifer Hale is a treat to listen to, even though she sometimes changes the main characters voice a bit too much.

Worth every minute and every moment listening

Years ago I picked up a copy of Eragon in my favorite bookstore and looked into it too see if it was any good. In my opinion it was dreadful and, after scanning some sections I quickly put it down again. I am always very cautious about trying a new author and had I remembered Paolini to be the author from them past I certainly would not have spared a second thought on buying the sea of stars. Fortunately my memory is not that good. What a change in use of language and storytelling Paolini demonstrated, what a great development.
Sleeping In A Sea Of Stars is worth every minute and every moment spent listening.
Jennifer Hale says in the appended conversation with Christopher Paolini something along the lines that she goes, she has not messed up. No, you didn't, quite the opposite. Together with Robin Miles you are now on top of my list of favorite storytellers and I will keep an eye on other books you read.

Immer wieder!

Outstanding performance!

The story is excellent - but I'd give 7 stars for the performance if possible.
