Inhaltsangabe

Performed by Welcome to Night Vale podcast narrator Cecil Baldwin and special guests Dylan Marron, Retta, Thérèse Plummer, and Dan Bittner, with music by Disparition.

From the creators of the wildly popular Welcome to Night Vale podcast comes an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is also a poignant look at the ways in which we all struggle to find ourselves...no matter where we live.

"Hypnotic and darkly funny.... Belongs to a particular strain of American gothic that encompasses The Twilight Zone, Stephen King and Twin Peaks, with a bit of Tremors thrown in." (The Guardian)

Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.

Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked "KING CITY" by a mysterious man in a tan jacket holding a deerskin suitcase. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can't seem to get the paper to leave her hand and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels.

Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton's son, Josh, is moody and also a shape-shifter. And lately Diane's started to see her son's father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.

Diane's search to reconnect with her son and Jackie's search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: "KING CITY". It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries, and their futures...if they can ever find it.

Not my cup of tea

Let me say right away that I am not one of the myriads of people on the internet, who are so self-righteous to think just because they don´t like something, it shouldn´t exist. I commend people who try something new and different, and the fact that it sometimes just doesnt hit a spark whithin me, doesn´t take away from the creativity it took to create something. And thats pretty much the way i feel about this work.
The whole book feels like a dream sequence from Twin Peaks. It describes the most outrageous concepts ("the mandatory local lottery, who´s winners are fed to the wolves of the local petting zoo") with such a matter of fact quality as only your subconscious can come up with in the weirdest fever dreams. The reading style of the speaker, which often strikes me as so robotic as like the book was read to my by a speak-and-spell , only hightens this feeling. I think this was not accidental but the intention.
Which takes me to where my problems with the book begin. For me personally this style is only reasonable in a 30 minute short story, but in a 12 hour audiobook I find it rather straining. The monotone voice of the reader had me often tune out, and more than once I had to restart whole chapters because I couldn´t remember what I was listening to the in past 20 minutes. Also the repeatedly used trope of contradicting a descritption, often whithin the same sentence (f.e. "they sat in complete silence as they were screaming at the top of their lungs") had me pulled out of the story more often as opposed to sucked me in.
So again, I can only say that if you are open to something new, give it a try, and maybe you really like it. It certainly sparks with creativity, which is why I give it a three star review eventhough I didn´t really like it that much.
