Who better to fight back the darkness of the world than the one responsible for most of it?

Daylen, once known as the Great Bastard, the Scourge of Nations, Dayless the Conqueror, has lived in hiding since his presumed death. Burdened by age and tremendous guilt, he thinks his life is coming to an end. Unbeknownst to him he’s about to embark on a journey towards redemption where his ruthless abilities might save the world. Many battles await with friends to be made and a past filled with countless crimes to confront, all the while trying to keep his true identity a secret.

Indeed, it might be too much if not for the fabled power awaiting him.

Everfall is a world of perpetual day where the continents float in an endless sky. If one jumps from the continent they will fall for many hours before returning to the same place from which they fell. Skyships rule the air powered by shining sunstone and industrial darkstone. A legendary order of knights bears mystical powers which they use to hunt out the dreaded shade, monsters that regular people turn into if trapped in darkness for the length of a fall.

It is a world of enchanted swords, merciless monsters, mystical knights, and hard magic, filled with tales of wonder and adventure.

Light to you

For the past few days I could not stop listening to this wonderful story that managed to bring me to tears. The narrators did a superb job of catching the essence of the book and add charm to top it off. The characters are written relatable. The story compelled me with senses of adventure, huge emotions and a longing to learn more about its fantastic world. I loved the story arc. It felt fulfilling. My appetite for functioning hard magic systems was very pleased. Now I hunger for more. May the light engulf anyone who dives into this story full of emotion and endless possibilities. For I certainly was.

if you like fantasy and technology, you love it

it's a nice new setting with magic (light) but while some rules were bend it is in itself conclusiv. Sometimes the terminology seems out of place but it makes you think about, if that kind of magic (Darkstone/Lightstone) is real, how could you use it. As someone, who read a lot of Fantasy (and even more SiFy) and never writing a review, I can say, that while some concepts ring some bells (so it's easy to grasp what is going on) it is definitely a complete new story.

Conquered my Mind

To start of, I need to say that I'm a fan of this authors YouTube content. Thus when reading my review, keep in mind that my opinions regarding this book are influenced. Nonetheless this audiobook has chained my inear headphones to my ears for the past 3 days. I just couldn't resist the urge to find out more about Talos and the world Brooks has crafted. the plot of Shadow of the conqueror stands out above plots of more classic high fantasy novels and with a few truly shocking twists it makes getting to know each character intriguing and highly rewarding. Another selling point of this audiobook is the well thought out hard magic system in use. without spoiling anything I can say that learning more about the workings of it is highly satisfying. Especially compared to worlds where you're left to wonder how magic worked. It seems less like a device for the author to resolve otherwise unsolvable situations and more of important anchorage for the story. Now, I didn't give a 5 star review and here's why: firstly, the quality of the voice actors is great and both manage to bring the characters to life. However, I found it to break said immersion to have them both speak all the characters. e.g hearing Kramer speak the bringer and then having Reading use a different tone of voice and slightly different pronunciation. The same goes the other way around and this is not to say that any one of each voice actor did a less than good job. It's just that I grew accustomed to both Kramer and Reading, reading the characters separately in the first half of the book. So hearing them read the others character took me out for a bit. Overall I have to say that this already is one of my favourite fantasy books and I'm looking forward in hope of more out of this fictional world. I definitely recommend this audiobook to people that like action and getting confronted with moral dilemmas in a thought through fantasy setting.

2 much

i normally like steampunk. But this world is well..not so good. It relies on so many alternative physics things and the story is so unlikely that even me, who really likes happy endings, gritted his teeth. What I really didnt like was the switch from warcrime criminal 2 superman. And yes the protagonist is actually a nice bloke who raped murdered and killed 17 million people. thats 3 times wwi. read jim butchers novel. way better. makes miore sense and is way morr logic than this pathos ridden work. sorry.

great world, mediocre storytelling, bad rendition

So I liked the worldbuilding and the basic story idea. With its eternal day, floating islands, the unique mix of steampunk and magic I look forward to seeing more stories set in this world. The basic story arc is also nice: a former despot on his eternal path to redemtion. Cool. But why does he as a single individuum have to be the best at everything? Best fighter, mage (yes he's still learning, but its clear that this is all thats holding him back - for now), engineer, with all the power of youth and the experience of a lifetime? Its an annoying trope in many 'superhero' stories - and its where this story mainly fails. Yes, he has strong characters at his side - but they dont really compliment each other. He's just superman and better at everything. But then I more a Batman/Spiderman fan anyways. Also I'm not so sure about the handling of the female protagonists character and backstory. Having heard only the audio version and not read the book I'm not sure if the male speaker was just a bit overdoing it (he is very annoying at times) or if its more the writing itself - its sometimes a bit tiring to listen to. Very on the nose and repetitive at times, and its obvious that this is a first novel and not done by a seasoned writer nor backed by a good publisher with good lectors and support. Still, I'll probably give a sequel or another story set in this world a fighting chance, in the hope that the writing and storytelling improve. tl;dr: not the best written nor read fantasy novel, but a fascinating world that makes me curious for more. Don't set your expectations too high and you'll find a fun time waster for a few days/evenings.

True regret.

Is true regret enough punishment for a lifetime of genocide, tyranny and rape? Interesting question to ask, not sure myself about the answer. Definitely a good book, even if I'm still undecided if I like the protagonist. Both "main" Knights were for me much more likable, but that's mostly because I like broken things fighting back.

Lenghty exposition is a neccessary evil

Love the premise, world building and characters. I had a few eyeroll moments where some concepts of the magic was explained once or twice too much (I will never see the word bond(s) in the same light ever again) and a character got a bit too godlike in my opinion, although how it came to be is explained properly. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5 if I could but knowing the impatience of a lot of people nowadays combined with the good but tenacious (?) beginning I can't give it 5 stars. I'm excited for the books to come. Until next time, farewell and light to you my friend

innovative story and great pacing

Warum zwei Sprecher genommen wurden ist In comparisson to other fantasy books this is nicely detailed. The first hour of thw story goes a little bit sluggish but after that its great. Why there are two readers is over my horizon... but i got used to it.
