Conquered my Mind

To start of, I need to say that I'm a fan of this authors YouTube content. Thus when reading my review, keep in mind that my opinions regarding this book are influenced.

Nonetheless this audiobook has chained my inear headphones to my ears for the past 3 days.
I just couldn't resist the urge to find out more about Talos and the world Brooks has crafted.

the plot of Shadow of the conqueror stands out above plots of more classic high fantasy novels and with a few truly shocking twists it makes getting to know each character intriguing and highly rewarding.

Another selling point of this audiobook is the well thought out hard magic system in use. without spoiling anything I can say that learning more about the workings of it is highly satisfying. Especially compared to worlds where you're left to wonder how magic worked. It seems less like a device for the author to resolve otherwise unsolvable situations and more of important anchorage for the story.

Now, I didn't give a 5 star review and here's why:
firstly, the quality of the voice actors is great and both manage to bring the characters to life. However, I found it to break said immersion to have them both speak all the characters. e.g hearing Kramer speak the bringer and then having Reading use a different tone of voice and slightly different pronunciation. The same goes the other way around and this is not to say that any one of each voice actor did a less than good job. It's just that I grew accustomed to both Kramer and Reading, reading the characters separately in the first half of the book. So hearing them read the others character took me out for a bit.

Overall I have to say that this already is one of my favourite fantasy books and I'm looking forward in hope of more out of this fictional world. I definitely recommend this audiobook to people that like action and getting confronted with moral dilemmas in a thought through fantasy setting.

The beginning of something great

I really enjoyed my time with this book.
This is a redemption Story of a Tyrant trying to escape his guilt. The world and it's inhabitants are interesting and his spin on magic is refreshing. Mixing the fantastical with physics.
It's a well structured and captivating story.
I hope for more.

The author is a medieval weapons and fantasy nerd

And that is something excellent. Anyone who has seen a Shadiversity video on Youtube (the channel of the author) can guess what to expect: Detailed weapon descriptions, excellent, realistic fight choreographies and mechanics that are sound and logical and explained to the reader/listener. In addition the story features a maincharacter struggling with inner demons and more or less trying to redeam himself, a captivating adventure and a world that is at the same time strange enough to be fascinating and similiar enough to be familiar.
The speakers are also really good. They give each character their own personality, transmite emotions and give live to the story.
Overall a fantastic (audio)bookm abd I can't wait for the next part of the series.

A second world, well worth my time.

Intriguing worldbuilding, relatable characters, and an awesome magic system that felt as real as anything else.
My favourite part was when Daylin first received and tested his powers. And I also really enjoyed some of the interactions between Lhyra and Qusack, [RIP] (if that is how you spell his name)

Though overall, it was an awesome experience, I can't help but feel, there was supposed to happen more in the story. The end came rather quickly and somehow felt less climactic than I would have thought.

Some things didn't quite make sense to me, like how supposedly nobody before Dylan ever figured out that darkstone suppresses arch night powers. Or how the bottom half of a floating island crashing down on a city is so much better than an entire floating island doing the same.

Anyway, I would still definitely recommend this book; especially to people interested in worldbuilding and hard magic systems.

Unbedingt anhören!

Auch wenn die Welt in der diese Geschichte spielt aufgrund ihrer Andersarteigkeit erstmal merkwürdig ist können das gut durchdachte Magiesystem sowie die Charaktere und die gesammte Welt überzeugen und man ist bald in der Story von Wiedergutmachung gefangen. Außerdem beweißt die Geschichte daß Fantasy auch OHNE Elfen und Orks auskommt.
