Who better to fight back the darkness of the world than the one responsible for most of it?
Daylen, once known as the Great Bastard, the Scourge of Nations, Dayless the Conqueror, has lived in hiding since his presumed death. Burdened by age and tremendous guilt, he thinks his life is coming to an end. Unbeknownst to him he’s about to embark on a journey towards redemption where his ruthless abilities might save the world. Many battles await with friends to be made and a past filled with countless crimes to confront, all the while trying to keep his true identity a secret.
Indeed, it might be too much if not for the fabled power awaiting him.
Everfall is a world of perpetual day where the continents float in an endless sky. If one jumps from the continent they will fall for many hours before returning to the same place from which they fell. Skyships rule the air powered by shining sunstone and industrial darkstone. A legendary order of knights bears mystical powers which they use to hunt out the dreaded shade, monsters that regular people turn into if trapped in darkness for the length of a fall.
It is a world of enchanted swords, merciless monsters, mystical knights, and hard magic, filled with tales of wonder and adventure.
©2019 Shad Brooks (P)2019 Shad BrooksFirst of all, the two Narrators, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading did an incredible job with this one. It is very noticeable that these two simply love what they do, they really impersonate their characters and give them unique voices, ways to speak and personalities. You always know, who is currently speaking and it's a joy to listen to these two professionals and let them drag you into the narrative.
The story of this book is well crafted, it is clear, what the characters motivations are, why they are doing, what they are doing and you're never really confused about what is going on, never getting lost in the plot.
For me at least, it was a kind of joy and a "ooooh" effect, when it's getting clear, how the secondary characters are connected to the protagonist (same as for the characters realizing that themselves), instead of them just being random people in the world who happen get involved with him in the course of the main story, which i very much appreciate.
Probably the best part of this story, for me, is the world building and the potential it brings with it for further stories. A unique world, with a "day/night" cycle, that's reminding of A Song of Ice and Fire's summer and winter. The peoples of this flat, floating world live during the "day", ever in preparation and fear of the next coming "night" (where the coming books will undoubtedly end up in, having our characters fight for their lives and the continued existence of civilization, defending it against the shade).
Although i do have two problems, which are the reasons for one fewer stars.
The magic system is well thought through and explained in detail - too much detail. There are just too many inner monologues and dialogues of protagonist just rambling on about how his powers work. I get that he is meant to be a very intelligent man with a deep understanding of physics and therefore able and interested enough to figure all the tiniest details about his new powers out by simply thinking and trying. But it goes on and on and on (kinda like this review, i guess). It's boring exposition. I feel like there would have been more elegant ways to show and explain the system.
Second reason: The magic is simply too powerful. Also, the protagonist himself is potentially twice as powerful as all the other similar magic users in the story (by having 4 "bonds" instead of 3, allowing him to enhance certain aspects of himself 16 times, instead of 8). So all the things he does in the book are very believable, in this certain narrative, but you never ever fear for his live and think he is in any kind of danger, which takes away all the suspense in fighting sequences.
Overall though, I really enjoyed the story and the plot and I'm really looking forward to the sequel(s).
TLDR: Strongly recommend this book for all lovers of fantasy, unique worlds, logical plot and character decisions and elaborate magic systems.
Promising world building, detailed magic system

Sometimes the terminology seems out of place but it makes you think about, if that kind of magic (Darkstone/Lightstone) is real, how could you use it.
As someone, who read a lot of Fantasy (and even more SiFy) and never writing a review, I can say, that while some concepts ring some bells (so it's easy to grasp what is going on) it is definitely a complete new story.
if you like fantasy and technology, you love it

My favourite part was when Daylin first received and tested his powers. And I also really enjoyed some of the interactions between Lhyra and Qusack, [RIP] (if that is how you spell his name)
Though overall, it was an awesome experience, I can't help but feel, there was supposed to happen more in the story. The end came rather quickly and somehow felt less climactic than I would have thought.
Some things didn't quite make sense to me, like how supposedly nobody before Dylan ever figured out that darkstone suppresses arch night powers. Or how the bottom half of a floating island crashing down on a city is so much better than an entire floating island doing the same.
Anyway, I would still definitely recommend this book; especially to people interested in worldbuilding and hard magic systems.
Like for your YouTube videos I am looking forward to your next one, Shad. 😊
A second world, well worth my time.

I would love to see more stories set in this world, whether they follow the same characters or not. That being said I do enjoy the characters and would definitely give a continuation a go.
The narrators both did a great job, with the small exception of one short segment where they're switched a couple of times within one scene. I would have understood, and even liked, if they had each narrated the parts relevant to the characters whose stories they had followed up until that point, but the switches seemed random. Other than that, very well done.
More of this world please

But this audiobook left me with a warm feeling only few books do.
The idea and the depth of the worldbuilding is simply spectacular. You can feel with the characters and time just flies listening.
This book made me write my first review. I guess that says plenty!
very(!) positively surprised
