Inhaltsangabe
An io9 Can't Miss Science Fiction and Fantasy title in March 2014.
Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.
What could possibly go wrong?
An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin…and not, y’know, die or anything.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
(R)ead (T)he E(f)fing (M)anual - errr... ...description - it says: Off to Be the Wizard is a light, comedic novel about computers, time travel, and human stupidity. So, yes, it helps to be "into computers" and "into playing games with reality" and other nerdy stuff.
It is a fun read/listening, at least it has been for me. The speaker is really good (I can't understand the "penetrating voice" statement in an other review) and makes the characters live.

Turning into a huge Luke Daniels Fan
And the best of it: He is turning an already greatly enjoyable Story into an even more plastic experience. A story by the way which will envelop you into hours of delight. Well, that is if you have even an ounce of nerd inside of you. If you do: Stop reading these recensions and get yourself a download already. My listening Queue for once is set.

for teenagers only
Würden Sie dieses Buch einem Freund empfehlen? Warum oder warum nicht?
This book is only for people that are really into computers and like playing games with reality. The speaker was unfortunately instructed to speak with a (at least to me) very penetrating voice that grated on my nerves. The beginning is great but after a while the plot becomes very repetitive.

one of my all time favourites
the story is entertaining and funny. I love the mix of sci-fy, fantasy and humour.
I've re-listened to this a couple of times just out of sheer enjoyment and I'm still looking for the file ;)

Overrated.
I find this book to be largely overrated. It's very well written when it comes to technical skill, but nothing aside from the setting really clicked.
The main character is an idiot and that is by design, not accident. He is the butt of every joke. Some people love it, others will hate it. This is a comedy and I bought it because apparently it was supposed to be very good comedy. I didn't even smirk once. It's apparently very hit or miss and for me it missed badly.
The first third of the book was the worst for me. The main character was so cringy I almost had to stop due to second hand embarassment. The only reason I kept going was because I listen to these at work.
As for the performance I absolutely hated it. No one sounds like I think they should, especially the main antagonist. It's just very grating. I suspect this was done on purpose to keep up with the tone of the book but I can't agree with that decision. In addition the voices of the side characters are far too samey.

bad
I can't stand it, when the main character is idioticly dumb, while it is explained that ee is not. I Wish I could refund this, I never got past the first hour. If this was a book I would have flipped pages.

Very wrong expectations. Very.
I EXPECTED a fun fantasy story exploring the idea of reprogramming reality and the challenges that brings(time paradoxa, artifacts of the simulation and what he does to it. maybe the makers of it or some ai stuff. The concepts of programming the magic. Dealing with the people and wrangling a life. Maybe helping build a city and changing the future. Just fun stuff like that.).
I GOT a story about him making a fool of himself immediately, going in completely unprepared and other people having done the exactly same thing before him. The character also shifted from serious and intelligent to absolute idiot. He was portrait as as serious and intelligent at the start, then literally went in and exposing himself without any prep to get a room in a cheap inn (which he gets to regret immediately of course, he is the joke of the story after all). Instead of, you know, working for the room while making his app better. Maybe adding a feature that sends the phone back to his hands if he looses it and resets the durability of it to 100. Which means that the struggles have shifted from: "reprogram reality and deal with the consequences" to: "other people did the same thing already. And now you have to deal with them. Ohh, and they're threatening to take your magic away cause they can do that apparently. And YOU'RE the but of the jokes. Cause you're an idiot. And there are plot armor restrictions of your power cause the author is unable to deal with the premise he set and make it interesting at the same time. *angrily points at author*"
As a programmer myself, this isn't fun at all. I wanted the bad guys to win so badly so quick its an impressive new record.
I just didn't expect to get that kind of story after the description.
Is that your kind of fun?
Enjoy!
Cause its not my kind of fun.
But hey, this is just my perspective and there is little wrong with the book otherwise. If you think "what's the issue again?"
or you don't have any issues with books that make the MC the joke and his brain the punchline because you just want some fun, than this book might just be perfect for you.

Very enjoyable thought experiment
What would you do if you gained the power to alter almost any aspect of reality?
This book takes a very well thought through guess at answering that question from the perspective of a 23 year old IT worker who is unsatisfied with his life.
The author took a lot of care to think about the consequences any changes to reality would have in the real world - which played a huge part in my enjoyment of the book.
The humorous and witty storytelling, the quirky characters and the excellent way they are brought to life by the narrator did the rest in making this one of my favorite books.
