2018 Locus Award, Best Science Fiction Novel

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars.

Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

The Flow is eternal - but it is not static. Just as a river changes course, The Flow changes as well, cutting off worlds from the rest of humanity. When it's discovered that The Flow is moving, possibly cutting off all human worlds from faster-than-light travel forever, three individuals - a scientist, a starship captain, and the empress of the Interdependency - are in a race against time to discover what, if anything, can be salvaged from an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse.

    Kritikerstimmen

"Fans of Game of Thrones and Dune will enjoy this bawdy, brutal, and brilliant political adventure." (Booklist)

"Scalzi has constructed a thrilling novel so in tune with the flow of politics that it would feel relevant at almost any time." (Entertainment Weekly)

"Political plotting, plenty of snark, puzzle-solving, and a healthy dose of action…Scalzi continues to be almost insufferably good at his brand of fun but think-y sci-fi adventure." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Star-Trek meets Game of Thrones...

...only this story is far less frustrating.
Forget lightspeed: in this universe, shouting at people to solve a Problem actually works!

    interesting story line

Containing the usual twists and surprises, the story is captivating, and physically adequate. I especially enjoyed Wil Wheaton.

    Hell

For me, this book nearly was torture. Only the great reader made it barely tolerable.
The basic setting of the story I found intriguing, but the actual writing by the author is very far subpar. I don't care if the story is heavy on background and politics, but in that case it should be somewhat coherent.
When all the plots are so simpleminded that an average 10 year old sees right through them, but the protagonists don't, it gets hard to endure.
Worst example (spoiler?): The freigter gets chased by pirates, and the crew can't figure out what they want, for there is no cargo aboard, only passengers. The finding of the crew council is that it have to be stupid pirates.
Oh, and the swearing: I have no problem with swearing, but when you have a nummer of people of whom every second word is f...., it gets annoying very fast.

    Worth your time

I don't know about the grievances some have with Will Wheaton's reading. I liked it a lot and his reading style matched perfectly with Scalzi's witty writing style.

    Very human politics in SciFi

Cool story, I hated Wil Wheaton in StarTrek, found him mediocre in Big Bang Theory but loved him here. Fits perfectly here. Real fun.

Less action, more intrigue, good humor too

Scalzi is a very interesting writer. The books are so different. In my humble opinion, his style improves, no 'he said,... She said...' it's however less and less action driven and rather a long developing plot with much intrigue. But I very much like it.
Wil Wheaton is amazing, very versatile, very convincing, never annoying.

Why Wil Wheaton? He's a terrible reader.

The story is amazing, like any other book by Scalzi but OMG!!!! Why with Wheaton!!!!!! ? Terrifying how he takes all the immersion in a book out the window, he's voice doesn't have any colours and it was super annoying to have to bare with it because of the story.

    Nice story, great narrator

This book is a long introduction into a sci fi story with some fresh ideas. the audio book is highly entertaining, mostly due to the fun way of the narrator. can recommend.

    Endet mit Cliffhanger
