When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.

What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda, and they're in trouble.

Love John Scalzis work Overall and did enjoy to this one. It’s light and just entertaining and it’s read very well. A pleasure to listen to. So yeah, I do recommend it.

This was my first John Scalzi Book and I loved it. Wonderful, funny characters, great dialogs, gripping - yet a little forseeable - plot.

Feel-Good Read

Scalzi is an incredible and nuanced science fiction author who has always had the ability to combine the light-hearted with the serious. This short novel of his is decidedly on the light-hearted side, if for some serious reasons which shine through every now and A short and sweet story to Kaiju full of nerdy references, clever ideas and fun details.

Wil Wheaton's absolutely excellent narration completes the picture.

WW's overacting strangely resonates with this work. The story is shallow but fun. It's what you would make up with your nerdy friends during lunch break. Why, it has nuclear powered monsters on alt earth that need preservation. Because: Why not!

Action ohne Anspruch

Yet again, Scalzi doesn't disappoint. I don't think many other authors could make such an absurd premise work, but he does. It's fantastic as always, and I love that Wil Wheaton performs so many of Scalzi's books. It was a real pleasure and I will certainly listen again.

Anyone who has already listened to this audiobook will know where my title comes from.
I've had it on my wish list for a while. The German version. Until I found out who speaks the English title. So I thought "yeah, why not, let's give it a go". I know this guy from Star Trek and The Big Band Theory,
I had no idea about the great combination of fast-paced action, coherent storyline and ... a lot of silly humor in absurd situations. That's what makes this book so entertaining. I think that's what this book wants to be, nothing more. Listen to author John Scalzi himself at the end of the audiobook to find out what the intention was for this book and how it came to be.
Back to Wil Wheaton. He does a great job narrating the book and does a lot of voice acting for the characters. Depending on the situation they are in, the mood and whimsy is clearly conveyed.
I can highly recommend this book. And I have since bought two more books by John Scalzi.

Wer dieses Hörbuch bereits gehört hat, weiß, woher meine Überschrift kommt.
Ich hatte es schon eine Weile auf meiner Wunschliste. Die deutsche Version. Bis ich herausfand, wer den englischen Titel spricht. Also dachte ich "ja, warum nicht, versuchen wir es mal". Ich kenne diesen Typen aus Star Trek und The Big Band Theory,
Ich hatte keine Ahnung von der tollen Kombination aus rasanter Action, schlüssiger Storyline und ... viel albernem Humor in absurden Situationen. Das ist es, was dieses Buch so unterhaltsam macht. Ich denke, das ist es, was dieses Buch sein will, mehr nicht. Hören Sie sich am Ende des Hörbuchs den Autor John Scalzi selbst an, um zu erfahren, was die Intention für dieses Buch war und wie es zustande kam.
Zurück zu Wil Wheaton. Er macht einen großartigen Job beim Sprechen des Buches und übernimmt eine Menge Voice Acting für die Charaktere. Je nachdem, in welcher Situation sie sich gerade befinden, wird die Stimmung und Laune deutlich transportiert.
Ich kann dieses Buch sehr empfehlen. Und seitdem habe ich schon zwei weitere Bücher von John Scalzi gekauft.

To beginn with I am a Scalzi fan, keep that in mind.

To start of i very much liked the story and pacing. I also liked that it positively reminded me of the Sci-Fi TV series Terra Nova. and in many ways surpassed it in my opinion. Then again i dont think its meant to compete against it. But still I had forgotten that itch I had for storys like this. Modern people in prehistoric worlds with gaint Monsters I mean.

All in all i was pleasently reminded even though I doubt that this was the intension. Also this book stands very well on its own and is definitely worth the Listen.
