A human diplomat creates an interstellar incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a most unusual way. To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: A type of sheep ("The Android's Dream"), used in the alien race's coronation ceremony.

To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero and hacker extraordinaire, who with the help of Brian Javna, a childhood friend turned artificial intelligence, scours the earth looking for the rare creature. And they find it, in the unknowing form of Robin Baker, pet store owner, whose genes contain traces of the sheep DNA. But there are others with plans for the sheep as well: Mercenaries employed by the military. Adherents of a secret religion based on the writings of a 21st century science-fiction author. And alien races, eager to start a revolution on their home world and a war on Earth.

To keep our planet from being enslaved, Harry will have to pull off the greatest diplomatic coup in history, a grand gambit that will take him from the halls of power to the lava-strewn battlefields of alien worlds. There's only one chance to get it right, to save the life of Robin Baker - and to protect the future of humanity.

I laughed a lot, though the humor is always clever, never silly.

It's a good, solid, science fiction story with no moral baggage, just a fun ride.

This is my favourite book by John Scalzi so far and I have read it in print several times. So maybe my expectations were too high when I got this audio version of it. The story is typically crazy and fantastic, funny and just a brilliant satire on politics, organised religion, aliens and diplomacy …

But: its style does not lend itself to an audiobook. It consists not just of narrative but very long parts of dialogue. Now Wil Wheaton does a superb performance: the voice, the emotions, the various parts – all flawless. However after extended “he said”, “He answered”, “she said” one gets a bit … well, impatient.

All of this is no matter in print, but when faithfully read word for word …Maybe for the audio version a tiny bit of editing would have been better. So my opinion: with this book I like print better.

Lots of action, lots of fun, some scary aliens and all narrated by the incomparable Wil Wheaton. Scalzi‘s books narrated by him are always on the top of my list.

Some concepts used have almost become tropes (Star cruise liner, 5th Element, anyone?), but they are inventively written, with quite some unexpected twists and turns. Overall a fun read, that while not making you laugh out loud too often will make you grin a lot. To be recommended!

Inventive mix of known SciFi with a healthy dash of new ideas

I really want to like it. The story is great, with interplanetary diplomacy and an action-packed slot. However, I don't think I have rolled my eyes so often in a recent audio book. All characters constantly agree on anything. Not that they want the same, but they talk and act the same. It seems as if all of them (including aliens) are coming from the same (clearly American) golf club. There is never any moment where you think that people are truly different.

And then there are fairly obvious solutions, that the author frames as novel ideas. Example: Nobody ever had the idea to create an AI by copying a human brain, right? Wrong, even the earliest researchers (aka Alan Turing) thought about this.

Also, the protagonist is a war hero, great fighter, tech genius, with high social connections and invited on a date by a woman he just met. It's just too much.

Still there are some good ideas in the story. And Scalzi has convinced me with other stories. So I will hope for a better next story, but I cannot recommend this one.
