Über diesen Titel

A peaceful organization of civilized planets is faced with a threat to their very existence. Desperate to save themselves, they turn for help to the most brutal, backward, violent species in the known galaxy: humans.

Growing up in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event known as "The Bad Week" hasn't been easy for Cross Agarwal. Decades ago, in a world before The Bad Week, he would have been graduating from college, starting a career, and living on his own. But in a post-apocalyptic time when mankind is in ruins and on the verge of self-destruction, Cross works in his father's subterranean cobra farm, tries to avoid getting involved in the turf war between his town and the Southern Basin, wondering if his future will ever be anything but bleak.

When a group of aliens appears by surprise and invites a select group of humans to join them, it could be Cross's chance to not only find his own place in the universe, but to also help prove that humanity is good for more than just violence.

Another banger from Luke and Scott

When I heard the initial content warning that chapters 2-42 would contain a lot of violence, i was a bit worried that I might not like it very much. But Scott Meyer can turn even a violent, Mad Max style setting into great nerdy fun. Luke Daniels manages to give it the liveliness it deserves, with a recognizable voice for every single character, which is quite a feat in itself.

Fun and nerdy spectacle

Brute Force ist Scott Meyer "at his best".

Klare Empfehlung!

Wunderbar verdreht

I don't think I can recommend this book.
the story is based on a fairly well established trope of "humans are orcs", in which humans are viewed through the POV of more civilised and peaceful cultures, who keep getting surprised and horrified by human activity that we view as mundane. be it keeping dangerous animals as pets, fighting and killing each other, or eating meat.
the issue with this story is, that the alien cultures in this book are absolute maddeningly stupid and naive, with seemingly not a shred of self preservation instincts.
I am aware, that this idiocy is played for laughs, but my issue is that it's just completely unbelievable.
for the comedy to land, the situations that need resolving would at least need to feel natural.
and I'm really disappointed, too, because I usually like these types of stories.
but you can go on the "Humanity, Fuck Yeah" Subreddit and find decades old stories that are written just as well or even better.
the saving grace of the story was the last act, that felt a lot more "realistic", so to speak, than the rest of the book.

the comedy falls flat

The overall story is average at best (maybe I should say mediocre), but at least it has a few good ideas and some ok-ish running gags, although one can see every punch line coming from miles ahead. Getting through it once is bearable, but I can not imagine anybody ever reading or listening to it a second time. However, as I went through the audio book, I have to say the speaker is just horrible...probably the worst I had to endure so far. He obviously tries very hard to give each character a distinctive voice, but utterly lacks the capacity to achieve this in an artistic, skillful way. As a result, he completely overdoes it in the way a 6 year old would try to go about this for an audience of 6 year olds and the result can only be described as cacophony. And to make matters worse, he has picked the most annoying voices for the main protagonists of the story - the main character sounds like I would imagine the noises made by a pig being tortured with an electric cattle prod, so it really is torture to listen through until the end. If you feel you have to, then read the book, but stay away from the audio.

More annoying than interesting
