Winner of Fantasy Faction's Best Fantasy Book of the 2017 Award

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best - the meanest, dirtiest, most feared and admired crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. But their glory days are long past; the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk - or a combination of the three.

Then a former bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help: his daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy horde 100,000 strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of impossible mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It's time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

Great spin on D&Desque Fantasy

I didn't expect much from this story based on the blurp and it took me two chapters to adapt to the setting but then it was a good ride. Fun, suspense, drama and action mix well and the prose is good. If you are familiar with D&D you will recognize many creatures from the monster manual and other things and although it leans heavy on D&D it has its own, if a little generic, worldbuilding. The idea of "bands" of mercenaries with tourmanagers, groupies etc. is funny but it wears of after time.
The narrator of the audiobook Jeff Harding took me some time to adjust to, but towards the end I thought he did excellent, giving each character a unique voice and delivering tempo and emotions very well.
This title certainly sticks out in the generic mass of published fantasy and I recommend it to everyone who is fan of the genre, it has a proper ending and the announced sequel will probably expand on secondary characters.
I'm looking forward to it.

Wrong voice for me

I love the book. Unfortunately I bought it through Whispersync so I didn't hear the voice first otherwise I might not have bought this book. Its just to growly for me and takes away from the pleasure. I'm probably gonna read this book.
