Über diesen Titel
At the elite Catenan Academy, a young fugitive uncovers layered mysteries and world-changing secrets in this new fantasy series by internationally best-selling author of the Licanius Trilogy James Islington.
Audi. Vide. Tace.
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything.
I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.
I tell them that I belong, and they believe me.
But the truth is that I have been sent to the Academy to find answers. To solve a murder. To search for an ancient weapon. To uncover secrets that may tear the Republic apart.
And that I will never, ever cede my Will to the empire that executed my family.
To survive, though, I will still have to rise through the Academy’s ranks. I will have to smile, and make friends, and pretend to be one of them and win. Because if I cannot, then those who want to control me, who know my real name, will no longer have any use for me.
And if the Hierarchy finds out who I truly am, they will kill me.

"Islington’s worldbuilding is exceptionally detailed and thoughtful, making suspending disbelief effortless. Perfectly balancing character development and plot momentum, this will have fantasy fans clamoring for more.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"Fans of Pierce Brown's Red Rising will enjoy this book, but it’s darker, deeper, and takes unexpected paths worth traveling. Trust that the author will get you there in the end." (Kirkus, starred review)
“Ancient Roman politics, dark academia, and epic fantasy coalesce in this brilliant and gut-churning masterpiece from Islington.... This is powerful storytelling at its finest, and the mind-blowing ending opens the series to so much more potential.” (Library Journal, starred review)
First impression was there's some influence from Pierce Brown's Red Rising.
Our protagonist, Vis, is not as arrogant as Darrow is portrayed, but similarly angry.
But their backgrounds are diametrically opposed, so it is more the blinding anger of a young man, probably less unique and just what I connect it with.
The story takes place in some fantasy version of a roman-esque empire, a long while after some cataclysmic event, which gave rise to what the book calls "The Hierarchy". People are all made to either cede their will to someone or hold the will of some amount of people. This gives them the ability to manifest, to exert their will and have it take shape. Certainly an interesting take on a magic system.
The story itself seems one of revenge, but it turns out more complicated than it appears to be, with greater mysteries yet to become clear.
Has a bunch of cute twists and turns, something I think James Islington might become known for.
Overall, an exciting listen from start to finish, definitely recommend you give it a go.

An interesting new adventure

The narrator keeps his pace and voices consistent, bringing out the subtle humor from time to time very well. He lets you focus on the story, instead of distracting from it.
The only thing I currently regret is that there is no second book yet; the cliffhanger is rather mean.
I absolutely recommend this one!
Amazing!

As for the narration: Authentic and solid. No quirky voices while remaining distinct for the characters. Just how I love audiobooks – let’s me focus on the language and what is actually happening while giving me plenty of room for my imagination.
Great follow up to the Licaneus Trilogy
