Keiran clawed his way from gutter rat to archmage in his first life.

His second was supposed to be easier...

Keiran of the Night Vale has staved off death for two thousand years. His mind and his magic remain as sharp as ever, but his body is old, worn out, and failing. What he needs is to reincarnate into a new, young body, and he bends his prodigious talents towards doing exactly that.

He awakens to find that he’s been reborn in a wasteland where mana has become a scarce resource. Even the internal mana generated by people is stolen away by those who rule them. And without mana, he’s no longer a mage.

It will take more than that to stop Keiran. With each passing week, he regains more of his old strength, but can he keep his secrets safely hidden? Standing in his way is his new home’s cult-like nightly mana tithing, a governor with deadly secrets, and a monster-ridden desert.

It's a deadly scramble to claim the mana he so desperately needs to survive, but Keiran didn’t become an archmage by accident.

He’s willing to use every dirty trick and tactic he knows to get there again.

Protagonist behaves rationally and has a constant inner monologue explaining his actions. Not much character progression, but a solid start to a litrpg progression series. No system or stats, just regular magic with tiers and spells where the knowledge and having the mana is enough

Nice and refreshing

Good beginnings of a progression novel with some flaws which can be tolerated as a first entry.

Narration was somewhat mixed. Some tempo issues i could resolve with going 1.4x. Wasn’t necessarily bad by any means but i hope the narrators improve over next books

Slow but steady beginnings

A brilliant isekai story about an archmage who instigated his reincarnation, when he felt his death approaching.
I usually dislike stories with MC‘s who are already OP because that leaves very little room for character development. But in this case the character of the MC is malleable because of his circumstances.
The thing i like best about this story is, that the MC thinks through his options very tactically and carefully. But he often makes errors or his actions have unintended consequences because the world changed so much since his earlier life. So he isn’t almighty like some such MCs from other stories.

The narrator is talking very clearly and his other voices aren’t over the top, so it‘s pleasant to listen.

I couldn’t stop listening, usually i listen only for a time while i‘m driving or doing other stuff, but this story took over from being a side character in my life to main entertainment.

A pleasant surprise! Very recommendable!
