As someone who has only seen the movie i see why S.King did not like it. The Book is way better and digs itself deeper into the Madness of said hotel and all ist Influencers.. What a fantastic road to Madness this was.. Take your medicine!

First suspense/horror novel I've listened to and it was an incredible experience. Wonderfully written tragedy on being haunted by the ghosts of our ancestors. The narrator sounded well trained and not overacted, but very vivid and believable at the same time. I can highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story with some supernatural elements!

I had read a translated edition of The Shining many years ago, and in recent times I've been revisiting King's books in their original English version. This one is specially good, with a narrator that shines (pun intended) when depicting Jack Torrance's plunge into the darkness of the Overlook hotel. Absolutely worth it.
If you only have seen the movie, do yourself a favour and get the book.

Zur Geschichte an sich muss ja eigentlich nichts mehr gesagt werden. "The Shining" zählt nicht umsonst zu Kings besten Geschichten.
Die Umsetzung als Hörbuch ist hervorragend gelungen. Der Sprecher schafft es, eine Spannung aufzubauen, während er den unterschiedlichen Erzählern eine individuelle Stimme gibt.

Ich fand die Stimme des Lesers super angenehm und sehr spannend, zur Geschichte muss man glaube ich nicht viel sagen, habe das Audiobuch gehört und gleichzeitig im Buch mitgelesen, das gibt nochmal ein ganz anderes Bild der Geschichte. Wirklich alles nur zu empfehlen.

Overall a nice listen, though not a 5 star rating. The characters annoyed me from time to time as well as some “scary” moments felt rather cringe.

The eerie hotel caretaker

Stephen King is s great storyteller. However I am a scientist and I therefore prefer the ambiguous when it comes to supernatural stories. Towards the end of the book King goes full bore hocus pocus when the hotel feeds Jack real alcohol, he is really freed from his prison by ghosts and all those ghostly creatures really come into existence. Such a story constructed within the real world loses its credibiity for me. A better way I think is to construct the supernatural within a space of ambiguity so the reader does not have to rationalize the magic in his/her mind. But I gues less rationally inclined readers may like the story the way it is.

Narrator was a professional voice actor who did a superb job!

Good Story, Except the Hocus Pocus at the End

The shining, like most of King’s early work is crafted wonderfully. The prose is brilliantly eerie and characters interesting, but I don’t believe it to be as much of a must-read as it’s made out to be. At its core it’s a haunted house story with very few characters. It comes off as the product of a “how much material can you wring out of a premise”-challenge rather than a story fitting its length.

The element of precognition and the supernatural are well used but muddy the lines between cabin fever and an intervention by forces from beyond the veil in a very unclean way. We somehow have to think of the hotel as both a sentient entity as well as a place for the impact of bad memories to manifest as ghosts… I think it’s a bit of a mess that doesn’t work as well as it should.

It deserves a read for anyone who has fallen in love with King but it’s not the none-plus ultra haunted house story it’s claimed to be and not even the best execution of its own concept.
