Suspenseful and hilarious, this novel is an outrageously imaginative thriller for readers who like their espionage with a dollop of purple slime.

Myfanwy Thomas awakens in a London park surrounded by dead bodies. With her memory gone, she must trust the instructions left by her former in order to survive. She quickly learns that she is a Rook, a high-level operative in a secret agency that protects the world from supernatural threats. But there is a mole inside the organization, and this person wants her dead.

Battling to save herself, Myfanwy will encounter a person with four bodies, a woman who can enter her dreams, children transformed into deadly fighters, and terrifyingly vast conspiracy.

"Utterly convincing and engrossing—totally thought-through and frequently hilarious." —Lev Grossman, Time Magazine

Kritikerstimmen

"A near-perfect supernatural thriller...Don't start this book unless you've got lots of time, because you won't want to put it down. It's that good."
David Keymer, Library Journal
"The Rook is going to kick off my Best Books of the Year list. The opening page alone is a gem, and the narrative just keeps getting better...This is wonderful entertainment."
Charlaine Harris, on her blog
"The Rook has got it all: secret powers, mysterious organizations, dark corners...twisted scientists, and a duck that can see the future...Hands down I have not enjoyed a good supernatural novel this much for quite some time...It's just that good."
James Floyd Kelly, Wired.com
"A beguiling and inventive first novel...The Rook is expertly written...full of narrative energy."
David Walton, Cleveland Plain Dealer
"A creative mix of suspense, the supernatural, and espionage thrills. It's loaded with dry wit and doesn't take itself too seriously...Certainly one of the most unusual stories you will read this year."
Christian DuChateau, CNN.com
"Great, rattling fun, as if Neil Gaiman took Buffy the Vampire Slayer and crossed it with Torchwood... Throughout a rip-roaring narrative, O'Malley off-handedly weaves deadpan humor."
Joyce Saenz Harris, Dallas Morning News
"Adroitly straddles the thin line between fantasy, thriller, and spoof....O'Malley is a nimble writer, effortlessly leaping back and forth between comedy and action."—David Pitt, Booklist
"Peppered with sly humor, referential social commentary, and the ironic, double-layered self-awareness that will have genre fans believing Buffy the Vampire Slayer has joined Ghostbusters."—Kirkus
"Wholly refreshing...If you like Harry Potter, Buffy, X-Men, or any assorted series that mixes humor and the supernatural, you'll probably love The Rook."
Alex Zalben, MTV Geek
"Impressive....Dry wit, surprising reversals of fortune, and a clever if offbeat plot make this a winner."—Publishers Weekly

...but unfortunately also a bit complecated to get into. Otherwise I liked the supernatural strong female agent aspect, but got confused easily wird all the different people involved...nur maybe that was partout of the authors plan, when I now think of it, this might be one aspect which make the story so exciting. mmh...

Very exciting Story...

Würden Sie The Rook noch mal anhören? Warum?

I'd like to listen to the book again, but certainly with somebody else reading it.

Was mochten Sie an der Handlung am liebsten?

Love this quirky story. It's quite absurd, but has wonderful ideas in it: a person consisting of four siblings; a person loosing their memory permanenty prepares by copious letters and notes left for herself after the memory loss; a government institution naming the different positions by chess figures with the exception of king and queen, because these titles are taken in the U.K., the ever present standard operating procedures, just to name a few. It's not quite like "the untied kingdom", but both are full of strange ideas and twists and turns, which makes this book very likeable.

Was mochten Sie nicht am Vortrag von Susan Duerden?

Susan Duerden has a beautiful lilt in her voice and a wealth of different voices for different characters. However, as soon as she is narrating, she has a dull repeating speech pattern within her sentences, which simply doesn't make sense relative to the content she's reading. Isn't there a director telling her to stop this dreadfully dull singsong? At the latest by mid audiobook you'd like to shake her and force her to just read the book already as it is meant to be told.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

This is fine light reading, to me it was a pity that I had to strive reading on with this awful way of narrating.

Such a pity!

The most amazing of all was the narrator! No words to explain how good she is! She managed to have tens of different voices and accents in the story! Very impressive!

Otherwise I have kinda mixed feelings about the book. The story itself is quite good if you succeed to go through the first half. My husband and I were getting kinda bored at the beginning and there was way too many details that we found unnecessary. Just when we thought we might never finish the story, it got so exciting that we absorbed the rest of the book quickly. We then understood that the detailed part at the beginning was more or less needed (it could have been slightly reduced though) to make us emerge into the characters' world and fully understand the conflicts.

Great story after the first half
