A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), it is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable.

At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor . . . well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

When tragedy strikes in her first week on the job The Stranger Times is forced to do some serious investigating. What they discover leads to a shocking realisation: some of the stories they'd previously dismissed as nonsense are in fact terrifyingly real. Soon they come face-to-face with darker forces than they could ever have imagined.

The Stranger Times is the first novel from C.K. McDonnell, the pen name of Caimh McDonnell. It combines his distinctive dark wit with his love of the weird and wonderful to deliver a joyous celebration of how truth really can be stranger than fiction.

Great dialogues, funny characters and lovely details. A lot of humour and wonderfully bizarre moments. The overall narrative is less original and without larger surprises.

The story development was a bit too slow and the end came too soon but it was entertaining and I am hooked for more !
The main character remains a bit dull but there are others who are surprising and fun.
The narrator does a great job, especially on the somehow funny parts
I really like this quirky urban setting and in contrasts nicely with the hidden magical aspects

Urban fantasy isn't one of my favourite genres (though one of my all-time favourite books is actually urban fantasy), but I do like it. And since I quite enjoyed other books by the author, I decided to give "The Stranger Times" a try. An excellent decision, it's really good!

The plot contains all the usual UF elements: monsters, evil underground societies, strange and inexplicable incidents etc. It's not really new or particularly original, but it's well written and entertaining. What sets it apart from the average UF novel is its humour - it's SO funny, it made me laugh out loud more than once.

Of course these laugh-out-loud moments are mostly due to the author's comic talent and sense of humour, but I think the narrator also has a major share in them. His perfomance is abolutely marvellous! There are some really, really weird characters in this book, their weirdness ranging from "mildly eccentric" to "batshit crazy", and he gives each and every one of them their very own voice. Some scenes involving particularly weird people (like the visitors on Loon Day or the giggling Dr. Carter) are so funny I actually had to pause the audiobook because I laughed so hard! It's easily one of the best performances I've ever come across. I think in this particular case the audiobook is even better (i. e. funnier) than the original novel.

Needless to say I've already bought the sequel.

I love the characters in this audiobook! The speaker brings them to live so well, I have no idea how to move on to other audiobooks from here.

I am not usually into fantasy but this Audio book was funny and full of suspense. Great work, simply loved it.

What fantastic fantasy

Die Geschichte hat erst kurz vor dem Ende richtig Fahrt aufgenommen, was aber leicht durch den wundervollen Sprecher und die Vielseitigkeit der Charaktere ausgelichen wurde. Ich werde mir direkt den zweiten Teil kaufen!
