Über diesen Titel
The Blood Angels Chapter of Space Marines is under threat. Having obliterated all human life in the Red Scar region of space, the largest tendril of Hivefleet Leviathan ever seen in the Imperium has converged and is making relentlessly for Baal.
To face this awesome foe, Commander Dante has called upon the Successor Chapters of the ancient Ninth Legion. The Sons of Sanguinius gather in numbers not seen since the dark days of the Horus Heresy. Thirty thousand Space Marines stand ready to thwart the Great Devourer, save the homeworld of their primarch, and prevent the consumption of billions in the Ultima Segmentum beyond.
But the tyranid swarm numbers in the trillions, and they are not the only danger to the chapter’s future. As the galaxy slides toward a terrifying new era, events far away threaten to unleash a greater evil. A further enemy must also be overcome, that of the Black Rage that lurks in the souls of all Sanguinius’ bloodline.

You can listen to this alone but after reading Dante I enjoyed it a lot more.
Super story!

As one might guess by the books title, its main content is about battle and destruction.
While this is quite typical 40k stuff, I personally tend to find it such ones a bit boring - "mind-numbing" as some lore master might say. No real character development, few compelling dialogues, little change of scenery.
Having said that, I generally like Guy Haley's books. Before this one I read Dante which I thought was excellent. However, The Devastation of Baal just never quite grabbed me like the previous work did.
Admittedly, the author attempts to make the story more interesting by interweaving several subplots which illustrate the events from different perspectives, zooming in and out of the picture and also connecting to the greater plot unfolding in the galaxy, i.e. the opening of the great rift.
He includes some good dialogues, minor character arcs and also gives some interesting insights into the organization and functioning of the Tyranid horde - even writing from their point of view at times.
However, to me personally, the overall story still felt a little dull and dragged-on. Not all of the side plots were equally interesting. Some plots and character arcs (if one might call that) just seemed filler to me. Also the connection to the events on Cadia felt a little forced.
The narrator does a solid job. I found some of his renditions of certain characters a bit difficult to relate to but overall I liked his interpretations.
Summing up, Devastation of Baal has more depth than a generic bolter-p* story, but there are definitely more interesting books in the 40k universe than this one. Compared to other works of the author, I found it rather mediocre.
Important but lengthy grim dark story

Writing is mediocre

The artist reading is OK, but I do not like his interpretation of the Space Marines. The all seem to mumble and grumble, where the grumbling might be OK hence the inhuman stance but mumbling is something I do not associate with Space Marines.
So the story was OK, although to in my opinion a bit to long.
The reading was OK too.
It's not wasted money, not at all. But it's not something I'll hear again very soon.
Average Space Marine Story

At some point it is being discussed why the tyranids are coming to the dead, toxic, barren cluster of worlds that surrounds baal and its moons. It’s suggested that the swarm is out for revenge, which is nonsensical in the first place and gets dropped the next moment.
This, for me, this is the Autor self inserting himself to tell us that there is no in-universe reason for the events of the book to happen and that’s there’s no other logical way to basically wipe out the Blood Angel+ successor chapters and instantly replacing them with Garbage Marines.
In old canon, there was nothing more important for BA than tradition and heritage. With this book it basically gets wiped out but Dante is like: „nah, it will be fine“. Who the fck is this pretender hiding behind the death mask of Sanguinius and what did he do to Dante??
