    Inhaltsangabe

For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. Working from texts prepared by Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, this collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies. This audio bonanza features 74 stories adding up to more than fifty (50!) hours of Lovecraftian listening fun, professionally performed and recorded for your enjoyment.

    exhausting to listen to

The speaker's exhasperated tone throughout the book is almost unbearable to listen to after a while. It's a bit like listening to an exited sports commentator. I can't finish this audio book

    Ein Schmankerl

    Das ist definitiv mein Lieblings-Hörbuch.
Zum ersten mal in der Menschheitsgeschichte gibt es hier Lovecraft-Fans, die sein Werk kongenial vorlesen und interpretieren können.
    Sehr schnittig.

a classic raked dish served best

the readers do their job well, and one can hear their enthusiasm they have as part of the HP Lovecraft Society ;)

HP Lovecraft is somewhat different: he is a classic, as one of the predecessor of horror and SF we have to thank him for these genres. his Cthuluh mythos itself founded a "new whole world" for other authors...

his stories are full of crazy, spooky concepts and characters that merit to be mentioned.

however he is too a stout racist, and together with his "gothic, byzantine, old fashioned" and therefore intense writing style and his evenly intense repetitive phrases make reading his stories indeed a nice bit of eye souring work. like a "real classic" ;) his work is somehow becoming an anachronism: it's obsolete to read all this xenophobic undertones and lengthy description of yet an other old city when the legacy of Cthulu lives on ;)...

that's why an audio book is even better to indulge the stories ;)

    Dark visions and disgusting racism

I knew of HP Lovecrafts Xenophobia when I started listening to this audiobook. So I was prepared for his remarks on evil "negroes" and their "degeneration" or the " refinery" of white officers. It was even amusing to hear his hatred and disgust against Portuguese or Italians, as these European people are no longer regarded with the contempt Lovecraft implies. But "The Horror at Red Hook" was more than I could take. All the poor of this district, whether black, arab, kurd or italian are depicted as devil worshipers sacrificing blue eyed blond "scandinavian" children.

I was relieved to find that TSJoshi has already pointed this out publicly. But this is so hateful I think you should do so in context with the story itself.

This being said I admire the artistic value of the audiobook. HPL's fiction is darkly fascinating, though strangely detached at the same time. His stories are mostly in retrospect, which sometimes reduces the thrill. Nonetheless there are stories that thrilled me.
