Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes. Five of this year's freshmen are extra special. They have a secret aside from their abilities - one that they must guard from even their classmates.

For every one person in the world with abilities they can control, there are three who lack such skill. These lesser super beings - Powereds, as they are called - have always been treated as burdens and second-class citizens. Though there has been ample research in the area, no one has ever succeeded in turning a Powered into a regular human, let alone a Super.

This book is for everyone who likes easy-going, young adult school drama. A bit of romance, rivalries, personal problems and insecurites, a few difficult tests, and so on... if you like that sort of thing, this book is for you. There are five protagonists and all are well written.
I usually prefer a lot more action in the plot but I liked this book. The fluff was, in some parts of the book, a bit tedious but still interesting enough to get through.
The narrator in my opinion does a good job as well!
I'll listen to the next one and hope for a bit more action.

Some topics and even characters that remind of the wizard universe, but with interesting additions both in story and characters.

Well written and well sporen. Still, I dont know if I listen to the last hour (and the rest). The equally stupid and realistic nature of the Training for supers annoys me all the time. I also fear (I dort know) that my der luckyboy suffers a cliche ending. Nevertheless, I would like to recommend this Story, which is not new but different enough. (greetings from Germany)

Die Story ist wie von Drew Hayes gewohnt gut geschrieben. Die Charaktere entwickeln sich und sind nicht pur eindimensional. Anders als bei den meisten anderen Büchern des Autors handelt es sich hierbei wenigee um eine Aneinanderreihung kurzweiliger Kurzgeschichten mit rotem Faden, sondern um eine "epische", zusammenhängende Story.

Der Sprecher ist nicht herausragend, aber bei weitem nicht so schlimm wie in der vorherigen review beschrieben. Stimmen und Emotionen sind wiedererkennbar und man wird mitgerissen.

I love the author and superhero stories, but for some reason this book was not gripping me like all the other Titels from him. Probably I get to old for High school stories or it’s the fact that for nearly all the book there is no clear goal the story goes towards, but following the live of awkward superhero teenagers. Still not bad and a good cliffhanger

I bought this audio book as an addition to the Amazon eBook so I could listen to the story in the car while commuting.
The narrator though is so bad, I could not listen to him more than five minutes. It's like Audible took somebody random from the street and told him to read the book.
While I would definitely recommend the book, I can't say as much for the Audio book.

A solid young Fantasy story with likabel mostly intriesting Characters. (5 main Characters only one lacks some death but he atleast has his moments of adorableness) If you like the premises you wound be disappointed. But Hell 25 hours with of entertainment feel like a steal. A grade time for little money. Totally worth it

I really liked this book.
It's totally worth it!
The narrator does a very good job providing different voices for different caracters.
5 teenager that normaly wouldn't have had any chances to become heroes are permitted to classes preparing to become real super heroes.
While the teachers know that they are in some way even more special than the other students, those 5 have to make sure for their fellow students not to find out.
This does cause some trouble on top of having powers and after all still being teenagers ...

First of all, I must confess that I am not really a fantasy fan at all and this was my first audiobook of this kind.
All the more I am now thrilled by the great story and decided to listen to all four (unabridged) books.

Since I am not a native speaker, it was for me a successful and very entertaining excursion into the, in part, very elevated English language.

The story is witty, intelligent and entertaining at the same time.
The characters of the individual personalities are well drawn out, so that you get a connection to the players in the very first book.

It is also an asset from a psychological point of view and it gets better from book to book.
Values, courage, cohesion, standing up for each other, justice, positioning, partnership and even the villains have their place.

The connections become more and more complex. It gets more and more exciting and the gradual resolution makes it a really compelling story.
I also liked that you are never abruptly pulled out of your thoughts and feelings, but have time to build empathy and connection to the particular person and scene.

A big compliment to the Narrator! The story with all its multifaceted personalities and all the different moods and settings is conveyed so wonderfully that you are immediately captivated by the story.

If there was a fifth book, I would come back!
