Kingmaker shows the fascinating relationship between two very different temples of the Assassinorum, as two agents navigate the complex social hierarchy of a Knight World. The stakes are high and the pressure is on, for an Imperial war effort hinges on them executing their duty before disaster strikes.
The story:
The Officio Assassinorum safeguards the future of humanity. Its agents are the bloody-handed, secret saviours of the Imperium, killers charged with achieving the impossible...and Vindicare assassin Absolom Raithe has just been handed the most difficult assignment of his career.
The Knight World of Dominion is on the verge of seceding from the Imperium, its court riven by factionalism and ruled by an increasingly unhinged monarch. With the aid of the shapeshifting Callidus assassin Sycorax, Raithe must remove the king from his throne—and safely steer a pro-Imperial candidate to victory through the brutal succession crisis that will inevitably ensue. His team will need to infiltrate a world steeped in chivalric codes, where every move risks discovery and every threat pilots an adamantine monster...for if the assassins fail, and Dominion falls, the entire sector will be plunged into darkness.

Amazing book, both for Assassinorum AND Knight fans

This changed with Assassinorum: Kingmaker. The three assassins and their mission is a great introduction to the knight world of Dominion. The nobility is hilarious to me and the knights - especially the ancestors - make much more sense to me now.
Characters are interesting and likely the strong point of this story. The three assassins are by far my favourites, but all are pretty good. Antagonist could have been better.
Without going into details, the story is above average, but feels rushed at the end. I would have preferred another 3-7 hours of audio, so no 5 points.
The voice actors' work is competent as always, again above average, but not the absolute best they have done.
But I would lie if I did not actually think more about knights than about space marines or the Necrons these last days. To me this is excellent and the sum is greater than the parts. Sometimes things just come together and I was thoroughly entertained.

and even though the titular Assassinorum Agents are the point of view characters, the main point of the book is learning about the knight society in the 40k universe that they need to infiltrate to complete their mission.
definitely one of the better books in the black library, even if this book also can't help but add some silly grimdark broodyness here and there.
this book can be read with largely no prior knowledge of the universe necessary, which makes it a great pick up for anyone even slightly interested in the setting
A cool exploration of imperial knights lore

Das kleine Team imperieller Assassinen und einige eher unfreiwilligen Helfern , ebenso wie die lokalen Honorartionen bieten genug Potential für Konflikt, Rivalitäten und Humor, zum Teil scharzhumorig Momente
Das ganze ist solide gesprochen, die Inflektionen, Betonungen und Pausen des Sprechers fördern den witzigen Plot, und auch wenn einige Twists absehbar sind ( aber trotzdem gut in Szene gesetzt ), andere Twists und Plotwendungen sieht man nicht zwingend kommen, und zum Teil versteht man erst diverse Kapitel später wie früh sie angesetzt wurden...., und je mehr die Angelegenheit aus dem Ruder läuft, desto höher wird der Bodycount, die Spannung steigt paralell , und der simple "Eliminiert XYZ " Auftrag nimmt zunehmend epische Momente an.
Selbst die eher unheroischen, zynisch abgeklärten Assassinen, eigentlich nur vor Ort um die Erbfolge zu regeln und beschleunigen finden sich unerwartet in der Rolle der Königs-und Kronenrettern wieder,
Assassinorum : Kingmaker hat mehr Plot als die meisten kommerziellen Agententhriller, eine solide Plotentwicklung, tiefere Einblicke in die imperiellen Assassinen Kulte für die Fans und schliesst mit einem unerwarteten Cliffhanger. Was will man mehr ?
Für WH40k Fans absolut empfehlenswert und für nicht WH40K Interessierte ein guter Anlass, mal in WH40K hineinzuhören
