The beginning was somewhat slow, but as it got going I got really into the intricate world building and the story.

I enjoyed it - this feels fresh and new, with a newly imagined world and a novel introduction of magic. If anything it could have been longer to flesh out the characters more!

Etwas schwer reinzukommen, aber dann fesselnd bis zum Schluss! Immer wieder unerwartete Wendungen. Eine homosexuelle Liebe, aber ohne Sexszenen. Der Anfang ist etwas holprig, bis man sich in die Welt einfindet.

CL Polk’s worldbuilding is always fantastic and the themes in her writing always resonate with me. I also love her characters for how they’re often just the right kind of different from popular types, and Miles and Tristan are no exception. The romance is beautiful and doesn’t overwhelm the story.

The narration could have had a bit more nuance for my taste, but all in all is well done.

Narration was hard to follow, very droning voice acting. I personally really disliked Grace and in away that made me question the author a little.

This book had me spellbound after only a few minutes. The language flows freely, is a joy to listen to. The story unfolds naturally and lets the reader enter into this unknown world chapter after chapter. The tension is binding the reader to the tale, the characters gain clarity and when the end comes we reach for the next title in the series. This is the most enchanting fantasy tale I have enjoyed in a very long time and it is performed with mesmerising skill.

The crime and magic stuff is not too bad, but the love story aspect is heavy with cliche and tropes. Also, I found the narrator‘s staccato style hard to listen to, plus it is often (in dialogue settings) unclear who says what.
