Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1890, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary - including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant.

Mir hat besonders die Sprecherin gefallen und wie sie die verschiedenen Charaktere deutlich gemacht hat.

Die Geschichte war sehr spannend aufgebaut.

It sounds like siri reading at times as well as too whiny which is unfortunate because it is a very quirky and good story. The strange intonation, speech's speed and weird interpretation of Jackaby was also distracting.

the story is fun and well-written, and the voice artist does a good job differentiating between the characters. No "high literature", but doesn't try to be - it's a sdetective story with supernatural Holmes and clever Watson

die Welt ist sehr interessant und auch die Charaktere gefallen mir sehr gut. leider ist der 'plottwist' von vorne herein klar und auch der rote Hering stinkt 10 Meter gegen den Wind.
wer darüber hinweg sehen kann wird Spaß mit dem Buch haben

Enola Holmes comes to mind. The BBC Sherlock Holmes vibe is strong, with all the scarf throwing… YA, set in the US. Our Sherlock is called Jackaby, has a bad dress sense and sees supernatural critters. Nobody believes him. When young Abigail Rook arrives in New England in desperate need of a job, she ends up as his assistant. Someone is murdered, the police has no clue, Jackaby sees something supernatural and off we go.

I listened to the audiobook. It was done well enough, although the narrator did some of the male voices with a very over the top and pressed tone taht grated on me.

The story did not leave much of an impression on me. Abigail is nice, Jackaby is Sherlock-ish, but the murder plot lacked suspense. It just sort of ambled along and it was all pretty shallow. It was mildly amusing. The finale saw some good action, everything was wrapped up nicely.

It’s a cute enough story but ends up being pretty predictable. The plot „twist“ at the end is very obvious and makes you wonder why the characters didn’t see it sooner. Jackaby is obnoxious at times and the main character pretty clueless. It feels like a lot if it could have been avoided if Jackaby deigned to share some of his insights. Doesn’t help that the voice actress really overacts some of the characters at times making the main character very whiny and Jackaby‘s intonations incredibly overdrawn which is jarring. Additionally it seems like the author didn’t really do much research into history which is especially apparent in the descriptions of the clothing (pockets sewn in the HEM of a skirt? Really?)
