A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It's not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher's new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager's city.

If they succeed, rewards and pardons await, but that requires a long journey through enemy territory, directly into the capital. It also requires them to refrain from killing each other along the way! At turns darkly comic and touching, Clockwork Boys puts together a broken group of people trying to make the most of the rest of their lives as they drive forward on their suicide mission.

So far I‘ve loved all T. Kingfisher books I have read, and Clockwork Boys is no exception. The premise is intriguing and did not disappoint. A band of criminals consisting of Slate, a forger who can smell magic, the assassin Brenner whose knives are as sharp as his commentary, and Sir Caliban, a former knight champion and paladin of the dreaming god, are sent on a suicide mission along with an idealistic scholar. They are to discover the secret of the Clockwork Boys, enormous metal soldiers that the enemy city of Anuket is using in their war.
The story is told from the perspectives of Slate and Caliban, who are also slowly falling for each other. This is a really slow burn though, so there is nothing actually happening between them in the first book.
The group’s journey through enemy territory is told in a steady pace with lots of banter and dark humour. I frequently laughed out loud and felt eager to get back into the story. The unlikely allies are all unique and multifaceted and— except for Edmund, the scholar— morally grey, which makes for interesting conversations.

I can’t wait to get started on the second book in the series!

High stakes, dark humour and very slow burn

Typical T.Kingfisher, the creepy lovely weird world of the white rat, interesting characters, with multifaceted relationships. But really? That's not a cliffhanger, that's "Alright, we made it to where we wanted to go. Let's get started..." Did this have to be two books?

There...
