The story is ok with some unneccessary undertones
The book is in my experience to sci-fi technocratic. The quote of Harari definitfley unnecessary.

Great message but not as exciting as previous books
I liked the scientific specifics that were always easy to understand and the general idea. However, I didn't feel much excitement - the storyline seemed to clear once the protagonist met someone. No surprises. The voice hasn't brought much more excitement either. It's hard not to compare the other brilliant books of Blake Crouch to it! It's a first that my thoughts drifted during a book of this author. Interestingly, I never felt I missed something when my attention was focused back on the book.
What I liked a lot though was the strong epilogue and the general social criticism.

Kein Vergleich zu Dark Matter oder Recursion
Upgrade ist nicht schlecht, aber im Vergleich zu Dark Matter und Recursion leider nur Durchschnitt. Nach einem starken und durchaus innovativen Beginn fällt die Spannung bald ab, und die Handlung wird klischeehaft, vorhersehbar und ereignisarm. Ich hätte gerne mehr Handlung gegen weniger "Genetikunterricht" getauscht. ;-) Vieleicht waren aber auch meine Erwartungen angesichts seiner bisherigen Werke einfach zu hoch.

Weak Story, disappointing voice
- the scientific background is the books highlight for the first few chapters, until unnecessary repetitions of dna chains and any numeral (floor 39, floor 40 etc.) brings the weak storyline to a fall. Yes, the author is trying to picture the protagonist as highly intelligent and slightly autistic, but it does not improve the writing.
- the reader changes his voice for women, children and for emotional moments. It does not sound natural and it makes you dislike these parts of the story.
