Truth of the Divine is the latest alternate-history first-contact novel in the Noumena series from the instant New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times bestselling author Lindsay Ellis.

The human race is at a crossroads; we know that we are not alone, but details about the alien presence on Earth are still being withheld from the public. As the political climate grows more unstable, the world is forced to consider the ramifications of granting human rights to nonhuman persons. How do you define “person” in the first place?

Cora Sabino not only serves as the full-time communication intermediary between the alien entity Ampersand and his government chaperones but also shares a mysterious bond with him that is both painful and intimate in ways neither of them could have anticipated. Despite this, Ampersand is still keen on keeping secrets, even from Cora, which backfires on them both when investigative journalist Kaveh Mazandarani, a close colleague of Cora’s unscrupulous estranged father, witnesses far more of Ampersand’s machinations than anyone was meant to see.

Since Cora has no choice but to trust Kaveh, the two must work together to prove to a fearful world that intelligent, conscious beings should be considered persons, no matter how horrifying, powerful, or malicious they may seem. Making this case is hard enough when the public doesn’t know what it’s dealing with—and it will only become harder when a mysterious flash illuminates the sky, marking the arrival of an agent of chaos that will light an already-unstable world on fire.

With a voice completely her own, Lindsay Ellis deepens her realistic exploration of the reality of a planet faced with the presence of extraterrestrial intelligence, probing the essential questions of humanity and decency, and the boundaries of the human mind.

While asking the question of what constitutes a “person,” Ellis also examines what makes a monster.

Stephanie Willis is unbelievably good in the second installment of Lindsay Ellis' Sci-Fi book series.
I really liked her performance in Axiom's End but this time she really (and I mean REALLY) brought it. It left me speechless at times. Wonderfully written and heartwrenching story that was exceptionally performed by the entire cast. I can't wait for the next one!

Phenomenal voice acting

it was a really nice sequel, to her own book. old characters were expanded, but the focus seems to be more on the new characters, to the extend that some even shortly take over the pov at some point whilst others are absent at times.
a definite improvement on the first book which I already liked in both story and performance!

New stories deserve some new voices

The amount of punishment the main character receives is at times uncomfortable (it's very real and realistic, not a bad criticism at all, more of a warning). Great, believable story set in the late 2000s, aliens feel properly alien, stakes are quite high. Excited for the third book!
Noticed some recording condition changes, slightly distracting at times, probably related to the covid times.

Alien toxic relationships galore

Packende Geschichte, leider teils etwas schleppend

this one is way darker than the first book. some chapters are a pain to get through because the writing and performance really make you FEEL like you have unhealable trauma. its really good... but it wont make you feel good.

very Well written and performed but rarely fun

the story is good, Ellis tackles the subject confidently mature, the pov changes between two characters, I liked the new additions to the cast, the end was heartbreaking in its fatalism

the content warnings are no joke, if topics like anxiety, suicide, self-harm, etc. are a problem, be careful if and how you engage with this

it wears its contempt for American politics on its sleeve and I can respect that, some might be put off by its thesis though, don't think it's intended audience are xenophobic right wing nut jobs, so it's probably not an issue

sometimes the narration changes tone, don't know whether these are edits or added later, but it was somewhat distracting

looking forward to book 3

I had been somewhat sceptical how well Lindsay Ellis would be able to follow-up to the excellent Axiom´s End, yet she did very well. While there was more of a focus on the human rather then the alien, it did not harm the story. The emotional stakes were high, and reached and impressive peak in the end. Also, addind a second main character war a great step, the Cora and Kaveh play well off each other. And a huge shoutout to all three speakers. The performances were all great.

Great sequel to a masterful debut

I keep quoting this book to people who dont get science fiction. It's a book with something important to say somehow. I find that's kind of rare

Magnificent

The first book was surprisingly good for a debut novel from a YouTuber. Thought it wasn’t perfect I hoped the author would learn from the first book but she didn’t. It even got worse.

It seems to me that there wasn’t much more to tell after the first book ended and this must have been true cause this book introduces new main characters and topics and they are in the center now and the old ones are tactically avoided.

The political issue and the whole racism theme - thought very interesting- could have been the final chapter of the first book and not an entire book.
I don’t mind boring books but a book that knows that and tries to divert from this problem the entirety of the story isn’t worth reading.

The audio quality/editing is just poor and the aliens are hard to understand.
To add an unprofessional male narrator wasn’t a smart move and totally unnecessary. The two women are doing a great job but it doesn’t compensate for the other shortcomings. This was by far the worst listening experience from an audiobook I own.

I liked the first book…
