I really enjoyed Hart and Mercy‘s story, so was excited for this one, but it just didn‘t deliver for me. The story dragged on and felt repetitive and downright boring, despite the seemingly existential threat the suspense just did not come across. However, what really killed the enjoyment for me was the absolutely insufferable heroine. She was cringey, irritating and downright silly. While I understand the wish for light heartedness, it just felt overdone and totally incongruous for a character who has lived for 150 years. She lacked any maturity or depth. I also felt no chemistry whatsoever between the main characters. Where she was exaggerated and ridiculous, he was taciturn and cold.
Romance tropes, insta love, meme speak and silly nicknames can have places in contemporary romance, but here it just felt bizarrely misplaced in a world of immortals and old gods.
The narration saved this one from ending up unfinished, but overall I wouldn’t recommend it.
