"The reigning queen of STEM romance."—The Washington Post

An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick!

Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.

The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.

Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor’s career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he’s the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.

Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but…those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she’s with him? Will falling into an experimentalist’s orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?

Ali‘s work kinda triggers me every time I read it, however I love that she put a light on STEM world and all the hardships and the unfairness

A romance throwing the the ugly truths of academia

This it my second Ali Hazelwood novel, and I liked it as much as the first one. cute, funny at times, and not boring at all.

A very fun performance of a cute novel

Elsie and Jack make such great main characters. I love their personalities and their character arches. They both have their flaws but they compliment each other and serve the plot in a very engaging and entertaining way. I also really enjoyed that we actually got to experience “quality couple time”. There were plenty of pages dedicated to their dates and hangouts without any drama happening, and I enjoyed that.
The one thing I did not really enjoy in this audiobook was the narrators performance of Jack’s voice. It sounded a bit too high pitched and nosy comparing to how I imagined Jacks voice in my mind. She did nail all the other characters though!

My favorite Ali Hazelwood story!

2 things I liked about the book:

1. a female main character with a scientific academic profession -> more visibility for women in male dominated professions

2. I really liked how equal and honest the relationship between Jack and Eliese grows.
In many romantic novels the male main characters have negative (sometimes even toxic and/or narcistic) characteristics that get romanticised in context of the love story.

Great romantic story without the usual storyline

I have to admit, i rarely write reviews, so sorry in advance if it is not very articulate.
I have read so far, all books of Ali Hazelwood and this one, is one of my favorite. It is so close to my heart, because i can relate to Elsie. Her friendship with Cece is hilarious and Jack is Man we can dream about. Thank you Ali for writing another Sleepless Night Book.

She did it again!

I most definitely fell in love with Elsie and Jack. Gods I felt so much throughout this book and I do think this is my favorite Hazelwood Novel yet! I adored their relationship and clicked so well with Elsie as the mc. She’s fun and clever while also struggling so so much throughout the book. Jack is a dream. The embodiment of to be loved is to be seen. Gods. May love like that find me haha
I absolutely adore the narrator. I love how she talks through the tense moments and really acts it out. It’s always amazing to listen to! Can’t wait for more Hazelwood Novels with her as a narrator!! OwO

Amazing Story and Voice

Omg I loved it. I have read literally every book she has written and I kinda like this best. The character development is so well done and I just really love how it was not like the big strong guy is there for her and fixes everything for her (which was kinda the impression I was left with after „the love hypothesis“), but that he helps her unlock her own inner strength and handle things on her own. So I absolutely loved that. I also really enjoy the academic side of her books and this was particularly insightful. As a women in Stem myself I love how these books let you daydream of love on the one hand, and science on the other. After reading this book I was both dreaming of love, but also motivated to work harder on my research. I love how her main character are inspiring that way.
Would absolutely recommend!!!🤗

Best one yet?

It's amazing!!! Your typical Hazelwood book, romance, academia, and humour all the way.

This one is just as great as the others, and I love that Olive & Adam had a short cameo, as well as the brief mentions of Bee.

I love it!!!

While I perceived the story to be a bit constructed, I enjoyed the overall experience.
Ali Hazelwood stayed true to form even though I needed some time to become invested in the plot.

The narrator bugged me a bit, at first: She sounded singsang-y to me, like some of those cliché poetry slammers do. It’s a question of taste, supposedly. But along the line, her narration grew on me. Especially the different voices were acted out nicely.

Lively narration
