Moving, touching, breathtaking

One of the best books I have ever read or listened to. Once and again, the Iliad provides the canvas for mankind's eternal struggles with love and hate, life and death. As cruel as wonderful as such. From time to time though a writer works her own magic in weaving a new fabric out of the (never really) old substance. Madeline Miller did so in 2012 with her "Song of Achilles" and now Pat Barker did it again with "The Silence of the Girls".

Re-experiencing the tale of Achilles and Patroclus from another angle is wonderful as such but Barker weaves into this tale another one that has been hidden so far; -- and is possibly even more cruel than all the slaughter at and inside the gates of Troy: the story of the girls, raped, humiliated ... and maybe worst of all: condemned to almost total insignificance. Yet Barker's tale is not one of cruelty alone, it is also one of ambiguity, love and -- finally -- hope.

Her language flows like poetry and Kristin Atherton's reading makes you immerse in this flow. An audiobook as disturbing as it is addictive, full of cruelties and yet so comforting. Beautiful. Wonderful!

von der Sage um Achilles & Helena von Troja hat wohl jeder gehört. Besonders schön an diesem Hörbuch ist, dass sie diesmal aus der Sicht von Briseis erzählt wird. Sie beleuchtet dabei insbesondere die Welt der Frauen bei den "heldenhaften Kriegen & Siegen" der bekannten Männerfiguren. weinerlichkeit oder übertriebene Sentimentalität findet man dabei gleichwohl nicht. Die englischen Stimmen sind wundervoll, klar & sehr verständlich. Insgesamt ein tolles Hörbuch! gerne mehr davon!!

This book feels like a direct response to «Song of Achilles», but it doesn't really add anything. Briseis is nominally the main character, but she is completely passive and doesn't even have strong feelings about anything that happens to her. The story of Achilles is completely focused on his love for Patroclus just like in the other book. I guess his mommy issues take up a bit more room here. The voice actors are excellent and the prose is good, but in terms of the story this book didn't really give me anything.

Die Geschichte ist gut erzählt und mit Gefühl gelesen. Was mich allerdings gestört hat ist die Verwendung vieler sehr "moderner" Ausdrücke, wie zB die oft verwendete F-Bombe, "to hell with it" oder "down to brass tacks", das die Griechen sicher noch nicht kannten.
Alles in Allem ist The Silence Of The Girls jedoch ein Roman der durchaus unter die Haut geht.
