Winner of the 2021 Audie Awards Audiobook of the Year.

Winner of the 2021 Women's Prize for Fiction.

Chosen as A Book of The Year by the Times, Guardian, Observer, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, I Paper, New Statesman, Spectator, Time Magazine, Times Literary Supplement, BBC Culture, Netgalley and the Church Times.

The spectacular new audiobook from the best-selling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, ‘one of our greatest living authors,’ New York Magazine.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has.

In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Messages begin to appear, scratched out in chalk on the pavements. There is someone new in the House. But who are they and what do they want? Are they a friend or do they bring destruction and madness as the Other claims?

Lost texts must be found, secrets must be uncovered. The world that Piranesi thought he knew is becoming strange and dangerous.

The beauty of the House is immeasurable; its kindness infinite.

    Kritikerstimmen

"What a world Susanna Clarke conjures into being.... Piranesi is an exquisite puzzle-box." (David Mitchell)

"It’s always great to have some fiction to heartily recommend, and while there’s been stiff competition this year, Piranesi by Susanna Clarke has won out in the end. A masterful work of weird fiction, it’s a novel that grips, perplexes and moves you, usually all at once!" (Observer, The Best Books of 2020)

"The fiction, nonfiction and poetry that deepened our understanding, ignited our curiosity and helped us escape.... For fantasy readers often eager to get lost in mystical worlds and escape the complications of real life, Piranesi’s predicament deeply resonates." (Time, Books of the Year)

    Piranesi

I am one of the few people who did not get a kick out of "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" so I was hesitant with this one. But the title drew me in. And well, I am glad it did. The story is really great. Mysterious and weird. But if there is one aspect of this audiobook I really want to rave about it is the narrator. So many audiobooks seem to be read in the same kind of "acting-voice", which always sounds slightly the same and is a bit annoying until you get used to it. But this one was perfection. It is a complete merging of the actor's voice and the character of Piranesi. It definitely added a layer of pleasure to the story, since I so clearly had the impression that an actual person, Piranesi, was telling me their story. So if you're interested in a philosophical mystery or just a weird tale, do yourself a favor and don't read it – listen to it.

    Kreativ, literarisch, nachdenklich

I think this story is brilliant

This book is very special to me.
The world that Susanna Clark created is curious and wild and just plain interesting.
The main character (Piranesi) absolutely drew me with his depth and naivety and smartness.
The other people in the book are likewise brilliantly crafted and it's fun and interesting to relate to them as a reader.
I loved the story and how the mystery unfolds but never really gives it's secret away.
It's a great book, when you are curious. If you look for a story you already know in a different coloring, this story is not for you.

    Sublime narration

Chiwetel Ejiofor had a voice made for audiobooks. It was such a pleasure to listen to, and his natural warm tone was perfectly matched with the character of Piranesi.

A very unique story and a really relaxing audiobook to listen to. I definitely recommend this book as it ticked all the boxes for me. Not for anyone looking for a fast-paced thrill but thoroughly enjoyable!

    A truly unique story

This book is unlike anything I have ever read. Captivating and suspenseful yet deeply poetic. It has nothing in common with the usual fantasy literature but opens the door into an entirely new world - the world of Piranesi.

    The year the albatros came

Intriguing story, interesting ideas, but would have been even better in a shorter version.

    Amazing Mystery

This is the best book I read in the last few years. The less you know about it the better. It’s an amazing mystery and you wouldn’t want it spoiled. The first ten pages are kind of hard to get into because it starts very descriptive. But after that the first clues to the mystery drop and it becomes very intriguing. A masterfully written book.
