Jefferson Mays
One of the most influential authors from Russia’s Golden Age, Fyodor Dostoevsky left behind a vast collection of prized literary works, including Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov.
In The Idiot, Prince Myshkin possesses a childlike innocence and trusting nature that leave him vulnerable to abuse by those around him. Returning to St. Petersburg to collect an inheritance, Myshkin realizes he is a stranger in a society obsessed with wealth, manipulation and power.
Public Domain (P)2014 Recorded BooksIndeed, I found the dialogues key to this novel and found them captivating and incredible.
I feel enriched by the trancelike atmosphere that arise through these dialogues and the interjected monologues.
This modern and fast flowing translation was a discovery, with Jefferson Mays a perfekt narrator: Never exaggerating his tone, he made me cry out with laughter because of the surprising and hilarious development of the conversations: "Oh No, I can't take it any more". And then I naturally listened further and was astonished even more. Also the more grave situations are rendered to perfection: The last scene I stopped hiking and listened eyes closed, face lit and body warmed by the sun, like standing before a grave and playing my last respects. I Hope, Jefferson will narrate more Dostojewski.
A lucid dream
