Boring book, great reader
This book is an excellent exercise in world building but not much else, as plot is fairly minimal. The reader is great, though.

Astonishing
On the surface this is a story about politics and intrigue, but that is only the setting to show that ruling an empire with wisdom, compassion and kindness can have a multitude of unexpected and positive effects. Compared to what we see on the news most days, it may sound like a fairy tale, albeit a beautiful one.

Just very pleasant
I keep waiting for the bad thing to happen. And while court life has many unpleasant surprises for Maya, the sheer number of people who actually have his best interests at heart is just so very pleasant, that you don't trust it until the very end. A very welcome suprise in a book about intrigue!
