Über diesen Titel

"Narrator Eric Mok makes this wonderfully inventive and diverse fantasy eminently accessible... Mok's Kai is appealing and relatable--he sounds simultaneously young and resigned, weary of death and pain and betrayal and yet still hopeful for something better. Listeners will hope we get more of this fascinating world."- AudioFile

From the breakout SFF superstar author of Murderbot comes a remarkable story of power and friendship, of trust and betrayal, and of the families we choose.

"I didn't know you were a... demon."
"You idiot. I'm the demon."
Kai's having a long day in Martha Wells' WITCH KING....

After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well.

But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? And why does the Rising World Coalition appear to be growing in influence?

Kai will need to pull his allies close and draw on all his pain magic if he is to answer even the least of these questions.

He’s not going to like the answers.

WITCH KING is Martha Wells’s first new fantasy in over a decade, drawing together her signature ability to create characters we adore and identify with, alongside breathtaking action and adventure, and the wit and charm we’ve come to expect from one of the leading writers of her generation.

Kritikerstimmen

“A wildly original and complex fantasy exploring how revolutions are won through trust, and destroyed through selfishness. Wells excels at brooding, powerful inhuman protagonists who just need a little kindness to be their badass best.” —N. K. Jemisin

“Unlike anything I've ever read. A layered and complex novel that delivers on the promise of epic fantasy.” —Zoraida Córdova

“Fantasy readers looking for new worlds and characters to explore will be enthralled.” —Library Journal

I had immense fun with this book, listening to it through and then going back again and again for re-listens of certain chapters, to make the story clear in my head.

It jumps right into the action with practically 0 exposition (not unlike other works by Wells) but that's what makes the characters stand out even more. As the story develops, you learn more about the world and its magic systems, without ever being served up some exhaustive explanations.

The main character, Kai, is very knowledgeable and experienced in the current timeline. However, there are several intersperced chapters of flashbacks to "the past", where we get to see what happened to the world and how Kai and his companions ended up as they are currently. In the flashbacks, Kai is young and inexperienced and sort of assessed his knowledge against new findings, allowing for much more insight into the world of the novel.

I particularly enjoyed the worldbuilding, which has several distinct civilisations and the hint of many more in the background. Without going into too many details of side-by-sides, the novel manages to portray culture clashes and repeated attempts to reach out across those and lend a hand.
The overarching plot is a war of conquest where, in the past, an empire attempted to conquer and basically wipe out all these civilisations (and their respective forms of magic). In the present, Kai is dealing with the political fallout of having helped to stop that conquest.

Another enjoyable aspect is the relationships formed within the novel - basically a very mixed friend group that gets together in "the past" and persists throughout the present timeline. Except one key member, who happened to be mortal.
It's really a stand-out group dynamic, in the way I enjoyed in "All systems red", and definitely a huge plus for the novel!
