'A masterpiece of imagination' STEPHANIE GARBER

No one believes in them. But soon no one will forget them.

From Sunday Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi comes a novel set in Paris during a time of extraordinary change - one that is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous desires . . .

Paris, 1889. The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets.

Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.

To hunt down the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin calls upon a band of unlikely experts: an engineer with a debt to pay; a historian banished from his home; a dancer with a sinister past; and a brother in arms if not blood.

Together they will join Séverin as he explores the dark, glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the course of history - but only if they can stay alive.

"Part political misadventure, part puzzle, and thoroughly charming, with a band of rapscallions and a string of surprises!" (Holly Black, New York Times best-selling author of The Cruel Prince)

"This is a book to swan-dive into, swim around in, luxuriate in. Trust me, you won't want to come out." (Laini Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Strange the Dreamer)

The male narrator is horrible. He has the same cadence every sentence - it’s so bad you can’t concentrate.
The story and characters are mediocre. The banter I found cringey at times.
Did not finish.

Meh

I thought this newer version might be a better recording than the older version but nope. The male voice is very monotone, machine like, does not sound natural at all. Makes it quite difficult to focus on the story. This is really disappointing!

The sound is awful

I haven't made it all teh way to the end of this, and I stead bought myself an ebook copy, as the male narrator just sounded incredibly annoying, at it only got worse over time. It's hard to say exactly what was so off putting, but he sounded very robotic. Every sentence sounds the exact same in rhythm and flow in a way? Even Text to Speech sounds better than this to me. There ar least it's so monotonous you don't even notice it at all anymore over time.
The female narrator was perfectly fine, which is why I give 2 stars at least.

The story itself was interesting, and I really enjoyed a group of friends who go on sort of a heist! Plenty of not neurotypical quirks and traits also really added to my enjoyment.

Very promising book, sadly ruined by one of the na
