The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth. Halten Sie die Hörbuch-Ausgabe von Terms of Enlistment für besser als das Buch?

Any audiobook lives on its performance, and Luke Daniels has a rock solid delivery. This is no radioplay, obviously, but every character has his or her own personality.

Welche Figur hat Ihnen am besten gefallen? Warum?

The novel centers around Andrew Grayson, a kid from the OK-ish part of a really bad town. We are slowly but thoroughly introduced to a not so distant dystopia growing ever more hellish. From civilian to private Grayson our hero goes through a lot of change, and manages to scrape by with that little bit of luck due a central character.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

Overall this is very obviously the first installment of a surprisingly well fleshed out world. Culminating in the standardized military scifi hooray final, albeit with enough investment in character development to make us actually care.

A solid beginning and stepping stone for a great series in the making.

Ein gutes Buch. Es ist ein bisschen schmal auf der Science Fiction Seite der Story.
Hier bekommt man vor allem ein action-lastiges Militär Epos.
Ich hoffe das ändert sich im nächsten Buch noch etwas.
Aber auf jeden Fall sehr unterhaltsam.

I enjoyed the first book of the series - basically, "Terms of Enlistment" mostly focuses on creating the foundation for this series universe and it does a good job. Some minor logic and plot and science inconsistencies - but otherwise a good book.
And the narration by Luke Daniels is absolutely fantastic.

However, the second book "Lines of Departure" has numerous GLARING issues in all areas of plot, logic, economics and science!
Reading the comments for the next books in the series shows that these issues do not seem to decrease - quite the opposite, in fact.

Thus, I'll not continue with this series past the first two I already bought...

WARNING: good 1st book of series, rest not so good

Der MC lebt als Soldat in den Tag hinein und es wird nichts über verschiedene Umstände erklärt.
Warum greifen die Zivilisten verschiedene Militäreinheiten an, wo kommen die Waffen dieser Zivilisten her.. etc.
Man verfolgt quasi nur das tägliche Leben des MC, was zu Beginn spannend ist, doch das große Ganze fehlt. Unterm Strich ist er ein 0815 Soldat der ein Leben lebt, Ende.

Kann man anhören oder auch sein lassen. Ich bin raus, ist mir zu öde und flach.

Meh, leider eher öde und ohne Ziel/Plan.

The story is easy to follow, and there is some straightforward action. Other than that, it’s quite boring, lacking both depth and interesting twists or revelations, or any form of social commentary or introspection, even though the setting would provide fertile grounds for either. In a word, „belanglos“.

Luke Daniels, as always, is absolutely amazing. He alone carries this whole book and makes it both easy to digest (which, again, isn’t really hard here) and even entertaining. If you enjoy his performances and want something with more wit and humor (but not any more depth or social commentary), I highly recommend the Magic 2.0 series.
